Gas filler neck hole cover?

I went ahead and relocated a 78 blazer tank behind the rear axle on the 65 lwb, as an after thought. I have already painted the truck, so I can't just weld the filler neck hole shut at this point. Any cleaver ideas on how to cover the hole up? My plan so far is to remove the in cab tank, and clamp the original filler neck into place so it looks like the tank is still there and for added insurance, use a locking gas cap to make sure someone doesn't fill my interior up with gas. It's the best plan I have so far, what do you guys think I should do?

Re: Gas filler neck hole cover?

I used the stock grommet and filler neck, and the rubber coupler that attatches to the tank. At the bottom of that assembly I put in an abs plumbing cap (can't recall what size). It is hose clamped onto the rubber coupler.
On the outside I epoxied onto the metal filler neck a gas cap that I made from a horn button from the standard steering wheel from our trucks.

No way you can accidentally fill my cab with fuel.
Greg.

Re: Gas filler neck hole cover?

Thought about using part of stock tank tube with locking gas cap. Hate to mess up a good inside tank...but what do you do?

Re: Gas filler neck hole cover?

I machined a plug out of a piece of 3" aluminum. One end looks lust like a gas cap and then it necks down to a little bigger than the stock tube. Put it in with a new rubber grommet and just a touch of super glue. With it painted white it looks just like a stock cap and with it being a piece of solid 6061 no chance of any one getting the cap off.

Re: Gas filler neck hole cover?

I jb welded a stock looking cap to the end of mine and painted it the same color as the body.

Re: Gas filler neck hole cover?

I beat a piece of old fender into a patch that fit inside the body, and adhered it with JB Weld. It's been in place for 18 years and still looks like it was just put in place:

Re: Gas filler neck hole cover?

I removed my tank and left the cap/fillerneck in place. No clamping needed.

Re: Gas filler neck hole cover?

In 1965 American LaFrance Fire Engine Co. removed the cab tank and added a 50 gallon tank under the rear frame. They put in a chrome plated button plug in place of the filler tube. It's still there in my C80 truck.
