Loose Windshield
Hello,
We took the windshield out of my 66 c-10 and bought a new one. I used the old seal, which does not have the chrome trim. The windshield was installed and I thought it was good. I drove it a little but I noticed that the rubber trim didn't seem to cover the top area as much as I thought it should. Part of the metal lip on the cab showed when you were inside the truck. I hadn't noticed that before but I'm not sure if it was that way. It looked fine from outside. I feel like it was installed right but now I'm not sure. I pushed on the top of the windshield slightly and the windshield seemed to come out way to easy. Any thoughts? Thanks, Jason |

Re: Loose Windshield
First you should always use a new seal. Second it's likely the windshield is slightly cut smaller than the old.

Re: Loose Windshield
So an old seal will make it loose? Has anyone else experienced this?
The seal is maybe 12-15 years old. Is it the age of the seal or the fact that it was used and then removed? |

Re: Loose Windshield
If you can see more of the metal on the inside but the outside looks the same, the windshield may not be seated all the way into the opening. Also the glass may be a tad smaller to cause that. You should not be able to push the glass out easily if seated correctly.

Re: Loose Windshield
I had a glass guy do my '66 and the new seal looked like what you described. He told me, "Not all seals are equal." He then looked at the one he had installed years ago on my '64 as it fit perfectly. After examining the seal on the '64 he said, " I used a 'Precision' brand on this one.". He ended up pulling the new glass out of my '66 the following week and installed a Precsion brand seal. The problem was solved. When holding the two seals side by side, it was easy to see that the Precsion seal had a wider trim skirt and provided the overage needed to cover the recess around the metal flange of the cab.

Re: Loose Windshield
Here's a late answer to a question that I missed. My windshield was ordered on Ebay for a whopping $95. I picked it up local. I was very impressed w/ the quality!
I pulled the windshield out to order a new seal. Last weekend, I figured I would get some rope out and give it one final try. After much pushing, pulling, beating, banging and near cussing, I am glad to report that the windshield is correctly in place! It just took a lot more work and time to get it right. It may have been more difficult because of the low temperature, but it's done now! Thanks again for all of the help that you guys have provided along the way. |
