Temp Sending Unit

What is the correct sending unit for these trucks with original gauges with a 350 installed. My truck gauge reads totally hot with a napa ts6469 sensor.

I used a new one on mine when i went to v8. It read really hot. So i cleaned up my 54 year old sensor and it read perfect

Are you buying the temp sender for your truck with the temp gauge and not the light?

I would buy the sensor meant for your original model. The sender doesn't care what engine you have, only what it is sending the signal to and how (gauge or light).

When I bought a sender for my SB 350 swap I selected one that was made for the original L6 250 that came in my 66 truck. This matched the gauge in my dash. You'll also need to choose between a sender made for a gauge or one made to turn on/off a warning light.

Sorry I don't have the part number. You would think parts stores and manufacturers would label these by ohms similar to fuel senders, but no such luck.

I had the same problem with my 65....I found one especially for my truck online...it corrected the reading....I wish I could recall where I bought it....try goggling it

I bought this for my 61 c10 at napa. Works just fine. 190 when running.

Installed the sending unit this morning. My gauge now runs dead center now with the temperature at 180. Thanks all for your help.

I just ordered one of these myself from them. Very pricey but will be worth it to have an accurate reading on the stock gauge.

Do not use Teflon tape on electric sending units, they need to ground out to the engine.

Brass fitting really doesn't need Teflon tape.

You can probably get the gauge to read accurately no matter what modern sender by just adding resistance in line, resistors from the electronics store are very cheap. Just did this, using a handful of resistors and a laser temperature gun, until stock gauge read straight up at 190 degrees. A little time and $1 goes a long way, 20 ohms is what worked for me.

Yes, it is possible to compensate for a sending unit that doesn't exactly match the gauge by adding an external resistor to the circuit. They even show how to do it on the Lectric Limited website --> http://www.lectriclimited.com/freque...stions.htm#E02

However, the temperature vs. resistance curve of the sending units is non-linear. The addition of a resistor will shift the whole curve but not change it's shape. So even though you can calibrate the gauge at a particular temperature by adding a resistor, it could still be off a bit at lower or higher temperatures. Exactly how much it's off will depend on how much difference there is between the shapes of the temp/resistance curves of the generic replacement vs. correct sending units. Just something to watch out for ... especially if it makes the gauge read too low at higher temps.

Im using one bought from autozone and seems to read good. the only real issue is that the end connector I got on the wire connecting to the sending unit sometimes moves and losses accuracy it just shows overheating I just need to find a fitting to make a tight secure connection.
