Oil pressure too high??

I started my truck for the first time last week. The oil pressure climbed past 100 psi. This is on an autometer electric gauge. I'm gonna hook up a mechanical gauge to make sure the reading is correct. When I put the new pump in the motor I used a Melling pump. It came with two springs. I believe one was red and the other was blue. The red one is in the pump. Could the high pressure oil pump really be making this much pressure? I'm sure with it making that much pressure it can't be good.

Re: Oil pressure too high??

could be a bad relief valve on the oil pump or an incorrectly manufactured oil filter. but first verify with a mechanical gauge.

Re: Oil pressure too high??

No, the Melling pump should not make that much pressure at idle. Even with the high pressure spring that is unreasonable.

Like you said, start by checking the gauge. We can go from there.

Re: Oil pressure too high??

Are you running the 10295 or the 10296? If your running a higher-volume pump, with the high pressure spring, on a tight motor (meaning new bearings etc, minimal leak-by), then I can see you getting 100-ish psi on cold break in oil.

Did the psi drop after the oil warmup up at all? Melling's "high" spring is around 75psi.

I'm running the 10295 with the red spring. The motor isn't a new motor though. Prob about 80k on the short block. I didn't let it run very long because I was worried about the pressure. So it didn't even warm up.

Re: Oil pressure too high??

The 10295 is the standard volume pump, so there's no reason it should be that high on a used engine. Even with the high spring that seems excessive. Its possible that relief valve is stuck.

Re: Oil pressure too high??

I'm Hoping it's just the gauge. I'm gonna run to the parts store tomorrow and buy a mechanical gauge. Fingers crossed! You guys ever try dropping the pan on one of our trucks with the motor still in the truck?

Re: Oil pressure too high??

I feel much better now knowing I don't have to drop my pan! Hooked up a mechanical gauge and its reading between 50-60 pounds. Thanks for the help guys!
