I put a 700R4 behind my 383, the shifter detent plate on mine is well worn, but finding each gear isn't difficult. I'm finding that trying to get the neutral safety switch/reverse light switch adjusted is a real trial and error deal.
I made a custom shift rod with rod end bearings,right hand thread and left hand threads,sort of turnbuckle if you will.
Now I just have to find the adjustment to get both neutral and reverse right and I'll be done....
