Wheel studs
i swapped out my stock 2wd s10 rearend to a 72 Nova rear end, and the wheel slug studs are 7/16-20, and the front stock s10 is 12x1.5. i would like to change out the rear 7/16-20 to match the 12x1.5. is this wise to drill out the hub and drums.?
if anyone has done this please let me know do's and dont's. |

Are the fronts press in? If so, hammer one out, measure the splines, go on summit, enter that measurement and find a 7/16" stud. I just did that with my front hubs and went to 1/2".

This shouldn't be a big deal, just knock one of the back ones out and take it to the local Napa or other serious parts house and tell them what you need to do. They are easier to put in if you you pull the axles out of the housing but it isn't a necessity of life.
This is the stock S-10 stud http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/se...S10&vi=1060872 OD on the knurl is 0.501 the OD on the nurl on the Nova rear studs is 0.472 http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2990&ppt=C0337 That means you would have to drill out the axles to put stock S-10 studs in but I'd hunt the metric studs with the .472 Knurl. Drilling the axles .029 oversize is going to be a drill press or even a machine shop process I'd think . Actually unless you have fancy chrome lug nuts it doesn't make a lot of difference that the nuts and studs are different as the bolt pattern is the same and the spare will fit either end. Just make sure that the taper on the nuts is correct for the wheels.

i drilled out the holes to a 31/64 hole size and pressed in the stock size s10 studs M12-1.5 mounted the wheel torqued to 100ft pounds perfect fit. no machine shop needed, no problems but only thing was i had to sharpen drill bit after the 5th hole, and it lasted the remaining 5 , i just feel better haveing the same size studs all the way around.
