Steering shaft suggestion

I'm not a fan of the cut and weld idea as too many guys screw that up by doing it wrong.

The U joint setup that VS posted is a popular option but you can probably do it with stock pieces if you hunt a bit and use the DD pieces to adjust your length.

A couple of photos of what you are working with and what you need to do would go a long way towards getting a simple fix that didn't break the back and was totally safe.

I kinda got the idea as to what to use, i cant make up my mind as to start from the 1"dd.
the shaft size is what i cant decide 1"dd shaft or 3/4"dd shaft. i know it is not that hard, but i dont want to overkill but not go smaller etc, you know what i mean.

An 800 series chevy 1500 would have the 30 spline side and a 400 series 1500 would have the 1 inch DD just install a quality U-joint (I dont like to go to cheap here) and you have that system I posted out of stock components for under 50 bucks with using a quality U joint

If you use some Chinese one it could bind and snap while turning.... No thank you

the slip shaft is 3/4 on the lower side and 1" on the upper. no need to cut to length, its got a slip joint.


there are better places to be cheap than brakes or steering, in my cruddy opinion.

Here is what I did for $10 (Astro Van shaft at junk yard). I had the 74 shaft from donor truck. U joints are not as elegant as Borgsen, but plenty strong. Retains slip joint for frame and cab movement (critical in my 4wd off road application) or collapse in collision. No welding except for spot welds after installing set screws treaded into the inner shaft.

Got it in a bundle with a bunch of other parts, $50/5 = $10.
