NOS vs fixing original
First off Im not bagging on the asking prices for NOS stuff, even though the prices are going sky high. Its just what happens when something gets popular.
I get that people would love to have the NOS vs repairing, but when does the price for NOS become too much? Is there such thing as "too much"? I'm looking at doors and tailgates and am starting to think a good body guy could probably make some money repairing and reselling parts. When NOS on these things is topping a grand now could a guy repair and resell for a decent profit? I'm not a body guy, but if I wanted OEM panels and some body guy has a repaired part in bare metal and I can save hundreds I would defiantly buy from him vs NOS.

I kind of agree. I guess if someone has the money and isn't to concerned with recouping if they sell. I've seen some nos parts that were selling for more than I paid for many vehicles over the years. Also, many of the repop parts are pretty good. The beds for example.
The prices of these trucks seem to keep climbing, according to sellers. Not really sure if they are getting those prices though. Seems most here want to sell at top dollar but buy at the bottom

Thats a very big thing in the high-end (think exotic cars) market. Several speciality shops restore original parts when the prices or availability of NOS gets high. The key is to be very precise and the product has to be superb, or it will be a short endeavor.

I'm encountering this right now...(Ontario, Canada)
Cab for my truck is $1,500-$2,000 in good shape Box is $1,000-$2,500 for a good used one Doors are $150 each. Bumpers are a couple hundred each And the list goes on... Needless to say I'll be fixing every OE part I can I'm not a big fan of how easily people scrap original stuff....at least set it aside and let someone else fix it...some of this stuff can get hard to find and that will only get worse in time. |

Remember that despite some of this NOS stuff selling...and often for big bucks...it is NOT most of the buying and selling market.
Most guys won't pay that amount for the 'cachet' of having NOS on their trucks because most guys can't afford to do that type and level of restoration given the differences in final, finished product...which is sometimes difficult to even see....and even harder to explain....lol. Even when new, these trucks did not have mint panel alignment, fit or finish...they were for the better part utility tools.....add onto that is the fact that the 2nd minute that the NOS part is mounted on the truck and the wheels and odometer start to move...it is now used, although a (near) mint condition used part. In my opinion....search for quality, unrusted parts and you should get very close to having a great final product. My two bits. Coley

You have to be careful on NOS parts too, because they may not have fit well in the first place and the dealer or some person set them back in the corner. NOS parts, especially sheet metal, don't always fit better. But nice NOS is NICE NOS!

I have to agree, nos parts have hit the roof, why can they ask so much ? Cause there is someone out there that will buy it for their price. I have done body work earlier in my life and yes not all nos parts fit perfect neither.

I have seen a couple of NOS gates on line and I think man that thing is nice, id love to have it. But then I think about it a little, I use my truck as a truck, never gonna be a show piece.
My last truck had a take off tailgate. It had been off the truck from the beginning. Then the original owner had a few rusty areas fixed and repainted. He put the gate back on and had the truck spray lined along with the inside of the gate. It was still in amazing shape when I got it. Then I used the truck as a truck. The first scratch I kinda winced a little. A few more scratches and a little bump, no more wincing.

I fix my original parts whenever I can. Mainly that has meant derusting brackets and then repainting.
If I can find good OEM parts I'll use those with NOS being a last resort/if price seems right. I have bought several NOS parts from the parts forum on this discussion board, I hope I didn't get ripped off any. |
