66 Volt Gauge Wiring - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm stumped. My 66 volt gauge wiring is two hot leads coming from a ballast resistor mounting on the L. inner fender. 12.3 volts measured at both terminals of BR. Wiring diag. attached. Is this install factory as I can't find a diag. online to confirm? Gauge does not move with or without power from batt or engine running. Wiring to gauge is not factory.
Thank you as wiring is not my forte.

That is not factory. It would serve no purpose in any vehicle so it's no wonder you never see it move. Also, the gauge in the dash is an ammeter, not a voltmeter. There are factory wiring diagrams posted in this forum. Search there to see how to return it to stock and get it working again.

Thank you very much and I'm not surprised it a bungle job considering the prior electrical finds and corrections. They had a relay wired to the HEI power lead and would not start at times, etc, etc... I don't like amp gauges of course and I'll see if it can be converted to volts and leave the face alone.

Called Ron Williamson at Williamson's Inst. and he converts gauge from amps to volts using original face. Great company by the way.

In that drawing the gauge is hot on both sides. Never work like that. I assume it is hooked to a aftermarket volt gauge.

Hi Jimmy,
Yes, it is hot on both sides and may be fried inside. I just got done taking the ballast resistor out of the truck and the wiring. I'll wait until after the Holidays to send the gauge out to have it converted to volts with the same face plate by Williamson. I could write a book on the electrical stuff I've fixed on this great truck (it's great now I should say).

So it was hooked to the amp gauge not a volt meter.

That's awesome! I've tried to install later model voltmeters with no success. Did they give you a quote?

I did not get a quote, but will send off anyway and then discuss. I bought a repop tach which was way off. It was replaced by Bros. Trucks and again, way off. Sent it to Williamson and they calibrated and replaced the spring. Dead on now. Price was $69 incl. return shipping to FL. Great folks.
