What is this 71 worth?
Hey Guys,
I've been looking for a C10 as a project for my son and I. I came across a 1971 long box that is a project but pretty solid. I am looking for a opinion on what it's worth. There aren't many around for sale so it's hard to tell if his price is fair or way high, seems high to me. Here is what I can tell you: - Pretty much rust free for a MN truck. - Doesn't currently run. Seller says its stuck now but ran 15 years ago when he parked it. - It has a Chevy 350 and 4 speed manual out of a car. Says he swapped it because of the higher ratios. Doesn't remember what it came out of. - Has a dent in the roof and needs a windshield. - Missing all exterior trim, which is OK with me. Opinions? He is asking $1600, i'm thinking it's more of a $1K truck... Let me know any other details that would help. Last edited by huie8383; 01-24-2017 at 05:44 PM. |

I'd go up to $1200 if it has a clean title

There was a guy on here just the other day looking for those wheels. You might could offset some of the buy in that way. Apparently they are hard to come by. Look up his thread something about bullit wheels. Jim

Re: What is this 71 worth?
I would try to get it running if I bought it but as far as buying I would count the motor only as a parts motor. So basically you are buying a body that isn't all original. I agree offer $900 and stop at $1200 and that's being generous in my opinion.

Re: What is this 71 worth?
I know I live out west... But that is really overpriced if you ask me. That is a $500 dollar truck. I paid $800 for mine, and it was sitting in a field. We yarded it out and got it running and drove it 1.5 hours home. I just can't fathom paying $1,600 bucks for something that doesn't even run.

Re: What is this 71 worth?
I'd say pass if you can afford to. It actually is fairly rough, my 2 cents. If you really like it and it's about at your max budget - then I'd look very closely at the door bottoms and drip rails/roof first - and bounce that off how deep you want to get into a project (frame off vs just get it running, etc). If your skillset is extensive and you are on a limited budget, then I'd say go for it up to $1500! It is MN after all...

Re: What is this 71 worth?
Hard to find something in decent shape up north. They are priced higher if they are in good shape. I paid 5000 for mine. Came from Virginia. I'm in upstate New York. Mine is a stepside short box. I had been looking for quite some time. Mine needed rocker panels and lower doors repaired. So that price in the northern zone don't seem too bad to me. Good luck. Happy hunting.

Re: What is this 71 worth?
No way I would at $1600.
That truck also looks to have a lot of needed rust repair. Have you considered buying a runner from another state and shipping it to you. I think you may be ahead money and work in the long run. Btw those wheels can SOMETIMES sell for good money, especially the 5x5 if someone is looking for them at the time. Good luck on your search or purchase. |

Re: What is this 71 worth?
They all need rust repair, it is what it is. I have yet to find a completely rust free cab for mine.
As far as what you gave for it, I would not let it kick ya in the rear, run it. These trucks are so easy to fix. They have been going for 50 years now starting with the 67 model year, parts still mostly readily available with more and more interest in these every day. They are not trailer queens, they are work trucks, that still today can be counted on when the going gets tough. |

Re: What is this 71 worth?
I would have to say $1600.00 is too much unless you know for sure it runs good, it is a $1000.00 truck the way it sits....

Re: What is this 71 worth?
I don't think 1600 is totally off base for an asking price considering your location and that most of these trucks in your area are long gone. It does look to be pretty straight. My big concern would be to obviously have a closer look for rust under the truck and a closer look at the dent in the roof... Lets face the truth, some guys are very fortunate to come from area's where these trucks are plentiful and they have lots of choice's. I'm from CT. These trucks are pretty hard to come by and if you do find one they are usually over priced Bondo buckets... Nice to see this one looks to have an uncut dash and maybe even the original radio?

Re: What is this 71 worth?
Thanks for all the replies. I think we are all pretty much on the same page. A lot of it comes down to the condition of the truck. I need to check it out closer but I agree, I think $1200 would be my max.
As far as my skill set goes, I have gone through engines, clutch replacements and basic paint work. This will really just be a project for my 11 year old son and I to bond over while also expanding my skill set and introducing him to auto repair. Thanks again for all the input, I'll keep you posted on what I find out. I may go grab some more pics and post them up for your opinion. Last edited by huie8383; 01-25-2017 at 10:22 AM. |

Re: What is this 71 worth?
I'd run the block numbers it might be with it, even if you have to sell off the 350 and 4spd.

Re: What is this 71 worth?
With that dent in the roof and the screw holes from that visor, look closely at the inside roof, around the top/above the windshield, and behind the visors. its fairly common for these areas to rot out from neglect of the driprail alone, with damage and extra holes, examine it closely, Also if there is rust up top, then there's surely rust on the bottom.

Re: What is this 71 worth?
"It ran 15 years ago when he parked it."
I love when sellers tell prospective buyers this little tidbit, in hopes that the buyer thinks he has a runner with some gas and a jump. |
