Computer in the cab?

Anybody else run their computers inside the cab? I think these mounts will work? Anybody have experience with this? Am I too close to the radio? Am open to suggestions?

Got mine behind the glovebox...but never again..from now on mine will go behind or under the seat

I welded a bracket to my brake pedal assembly. Clears everything with ease and i don't forsee a problem yet. Only reason I didn't put it under the seat was that I didn't want to extend all the wires. Each wire was cut and shortened tho

Good feedback. Can I ask why? I ran my last one underwood, but wanted to clean up the engine compartment. This is close to where the wiring comes out to the engine, but I am concerned about RF interference with the radio...

Have you had issues in the glovebox? What was the issue?

Now is the time to move mine if needed....

Not in the glove box...behind it..mine has factory air and trying to route the harness and squeeze the comp and fuse block in was a nightmare..plus I've got very large hands so that made it even worse..when in bought my harness they even suggested a longer one but I thought there was plenty of room under dash..from now on I will just run the harness down the back of the engine and under the floorboard and do all my wiring under or behind seat mainly because of room..I'm working on my 53 now that has even less roon behind dash than my 81 does..

As for the radio.my comp and fuse block is about a foot or so from the radio and I havnt had any issues

Looks like you got a bunch more room under dash than I did...you might be alright where you've got it..

I mounted my computer up underneath the glovebox. Ran the harness behind the heater core and the computer is being held up by a metal strap. The metal strap is mounted at the firewall and on the back side of the glovebox door support.

Well, that's why I'm concerned. I've got about 7 inches from the front of the dash to the computer, and the radio requires 4 inches (RetroSound). With the RCA's, and the USB cables I'm going to be tight. Guess I could shield the radio with something.

Can't really move it to the right, the unfilled mount you see is for the fuses and relays for the engine harness. That's also why I have the large hole thru the firewall. And of course, I'm running Vintage Air, so the passenger under dash area is getting pretty crowded.

I like the one mounted to the brake box. I guess I could move it over there, but then it's close to the body harness and I don't really think my harness is long enough. Hate to start cutting wires on a new harness.

I appreciate the input from everybody, guess I've a decision to make.

If you are thinking about something like vintage air it will be in the way. I ordered my harness from Hot Rod Harnesses in LA. They made it longer to go under my seat. I welded a half pipe on the high hump ((went with the with T56 6 Speed)'to hold the thick wiring harness then came up underneath the seat. Totally invisible and works Great. If your NOT running AC you have the room. Looks Very Nice

I've actually already mounted the vintage air, it's just not re-installed yet. I mocked all this up prior to painting the inside, with the air box mounted as well. There is more room behind the glove box opening than it looks, the pix was taken thru the passenger window. The ECU is centered up pretty well behind, maybe slightly to the left of the radio, and the TCU to the right. They are both on the top of what I would call the trans hump. The hole for the harness is also in the "trans hump" or curved part of the firewall. I welded bolts thru for the vintage air as well, made my drain hole for the condensate, and test fit everything (including harness) prior to paint. I did it that way prior to welding in and smoothing the firewall. I was just looking at radio clearance and got worried about RF.

Everybody's input is much appreciated. I'm going to leave it where it is. If I've got an RF problem down the road, I'll handle it then. I do enjoy seeing where everybody else put theirs! Lots of good ideas and nice work by all!

I have never heard of anyone having RF interference with the ECM being too close to the radio, so as long as your radio fits with them mounted there I would think you'd be fine.

Do you have a build thread on your truck, or more pics? Looks like its going to be nice.

RCA's can get interference but you usually need them right next to a power wire for a pretty long run. I have a set of shielded RCA cables that I've used in multiple vehicles next to power wires and other RF noise producing things and I haven't had any issues. If you want some insurance now to prevent taking stuff apart later pick up a set.

The antennae is already shielded and you'd need something with a powerful RF signal to mess up the head unit itself. The computer with its injector and spark outputs are probably the noisiest things but they really aren't powerful enough to cause issues unless you coil the RCA's or antennae wire around them.

In most car apps, the only thing that will potentially incur interference would be: RCA source cables, 3.5mm aux jacks, improperly shielded wiring (aka using construction wire in a car), or anything on the ethernet/cat5/6 network. Most swaps arent using CAT, and the LAN systems are insulated.

FWIW, I have my TAC module stuff mounted right behind the radio, and my ECM is in the passenger footwell area on the backside of the firewall.

"ls1nova"... No, I don't have a build thread but I appreciate your kind words. I need a build thread, I'm just not sure I have the energy.... Today I mounted the vintage air, the fuses and relays for the harness, the harness itself out to the engine (what a pain dragging all those fittings thru a 1.5 inch hole) and quit because my knees hurt and I'm tired. Still lots to do. I took pix with the phone, but am so technically challenged I can't even download them to the computer.

I appreciate the advice. For what it's worth, I grew up in Adrian Missouri, not too far from where you are at.
