86 4 x 4 transmission doesn't downshift
I bought an 86 4 x 4 for my son, he just turned 13 , I know he still has a while before he can drive it but it was too nice to pass up. It has been a while but I also owned an 85 that was similar. Anyway this thing is about the slowest truck on the road,it is completly stock 305 with automatic. It seems to run good just is very slow.maybe my perception is bad since I have been driving my 67 SB with a built 383 ! the transmission doesn't downshift as easy as it should, basically have to floor it to get it to downshift. Is there any adjustment that can be made ? What should this thing be timed at, I have moved the distributer around and have gotten it to run better but it will ping when I advance it that far. Thanks for the help.

My '86 2WD has a TH350C. I don't know about the 4WDs, though.

could be a 350C, 400, or a 700R4, and all are very different...

It is a 4 speed automatic, I assumed that the 700R was the only one that had overdrive on it.

RShaips, it is in fact a 700R4, you didnt mention anything about overdrive in your initial post, so there was no way for us to know. i would start by changing the fluid and filter, and adjusting your TV cable as per www.73-87.com, then let us know whats happening from there.
