I will be rebuilding my 283 also. I thought about putting in a 350 with a 700R4 but the truck is original and since I always tell others with original trucks to keep them that way how could I not. Only switch is I now have a Muncie 3 speed with OD so I will be happy with that I hope.

Just curious about heads for a 283. I still have the original 283 in my truck and it has surprisingly really good compression. I've considered leaving it in and putting a different cam, intake, and carb. I've heard people using 305 heads and I was wondering if I could use a set of 1.94s I have off of a 350 on it? They have newer valve guides. I've heard old 283 heads don't handle the newer fuel that well. I don't know the casting # off hand. I also have a set of double hump 2.02 heads, but I figure they would be better on a 350. My guess is I could use them but the compression will be different??

I think the lead that used to be in gas lubricated the valve guides. I think the new guides don't need the lead.

Maybe I will try the 1.94s with the bigger cam. I kinda like the idea of a couple extra mounting holes on the front in the newer heads. I'm actually more curious how much better the 283 will run with some of the mods (carb,intake,cam,and different heads)

The problem with putting later model heads from a 350 onto a 283 is that the much larger combustion chambers will kill the compression on a 283. It will drop to likely 7 or 7.5-1. This is one of the reasons that the HO305 heads are widely used when upgrading a 283. The HO305 heads have 1.84 intake valves as opposed the the 1.74 intake valves in the old Power Pak heads, plus they have aprox 58cc combustion chambers.
