Re: 60-66 GMC or Chevy, grey interior?
No explanation needed Mack. What I see lately here and on other sites , are people claiming things that simply are not true , I am not picking anyone out in this thread so please do not get offended. Its really not touchy but I do get defensive in my writing but not offended by the responses , just like to prove or share the best facts I can. If it seems touchy its because of the continuous claims of silver and the disbelief of facts. This site and great people have taught me a ton by just discussing topics and that makes me search for facts. That is my challenge , to post facts best I can.

Re: 60-66 GMC or Chevy, grey interior?
So you are saying there is a chance that some came silver?
Just pokin' at ya. 60-66 Thank you for the data you bring to this site. One of the reasons I hang around here. I realize that the way I take perfectly sound stock trucks and "butcher" them must wear a little thin with some of the restoration folks. Not my intent. Never has been. |

Re: 60-66 GMC or Chevy, grey interior?
LoL , its all in good fun. Im not totally a restoration guy either . I like them no matter what chassis or engine mods , but when you change interior colors , that turns me right off. Ive yet to see an interior I liked in another color. I shop for trucks often , when I see an incorrectly painted interior I move on quickly. Theres just some things I cant stand. Robert it looks like your building some nice trucks ! Heres one I completely modified my way that retained the factory fawn along with some comfort options.

The local fire dept had two 66 chevy fire trucks They were bought new thru a government/ chevy program to help small fire dept back then. They are all red color inside and out. I talked to the guys that were on the fire board then and they said that is the way they came to the dealer. The guys on the fire board picked them up at the local dealer and added the fire body to the truck their selves to save money. Were they painted fawn color inside first? and then chevy repainted them? or were they just painted red? since they were fire trucks. I cant see any other color showing. When was the interior painted on the assembly line? |

Re: 60-66 GMC or Chevy, grey interior?
Hello 60-66,
My 1960 C10 interior is a two tone dark gray and silver gray as shown in the picture. Do I understand from your posts that the entire interior was originally just the silver gray and somebody must have modified my interior?

Re: 60-66 GMC or Chevy, grey interior?
No , your truck is a Custom , its correct and looks original paint. Heres info on the different 1960 interior colors. Does your truck still have the original 1960 only floor mat ?
Standard interiors; Custom Interior:

One of the trucks a farmer has and usess it as a service truck. When this topic started i looked it over good and could not see the fawn color anyplace or any overspray. So that is why i asked. If it was repainted they did an perfect job. I looked under the floor mat behind radio delete plate behind dash and rubber parts and it was red. Almost started to scrape the red paint to look for fawn paint. But its not my truck and he is picky with his stuff. I have an 53 state dump truck and you can see its been painted inside several times. I wounder if some of these trucks guys think are not fawn color have been wrecked and they repainted the interior and the paint did not match. My grandad had a 66 that was wrecked and they repainted the whole truck and the interior never matched the other 66 he had??? Along with dealing with 50 plus year old paint and trucks that have been repainted with what kind of paint on top anything could happen. There could be some special painted trucks |

Re: 60-66 GMC or Chevy, grey interior?
I have a question, since Fawn is the only color available, why don't any of the sites have fawn seat covers or sun visors? All have saddle, gray, palomino, blue, red, etc. but no gold/fawn. any suggestions? I need both a seat cover and visors. Thanks! -Jim

Re: 60-66 GMC or Chevy, grey interior?
Heres an interesting graph of interior and exterior colors I found in the 66 Data book. Notice you can get any interior color you want as long as its FAWN for Chevy pickups. Vans were different.

Re: 60-66 GMC or Chevy, grey interior?
Geez, never having owned or even closely looked at a 1960 model before, I had no idea the floor mat design was unique to that year. If asked about this before today, I probably would have confidently dispensed incorrect information on the matter. This illustrates perfectly the way bad info keeps getting circulated.
Thanks for those pics Jon. Last edited by oem4me; 10-13-2017 at 01:33 AM. |

Re: 60-66 GMC or Chevy, grey interior?
Thats a good question Raylube . Heres some pictures of the nicest 1962 GMC pickup yet to be found along with the nicest 1962 Chevy pickup yet to be found interiors but please note these are two different cameras and one shot is indoors and one is out. GMC has 900 miles and the 1962 Chevy I think has 1400 miles. In your picture it states Fawn Metallic for Suburban and Panel , interesting. It would be nice to look further in that 1962 GMC Data book for more info on the paint codes. Tough book to find !

Re: 60-66 GMC or Chevy, grey interior?
Thank you for that . By chance are you able to find 1961 . Reason is , 1961 silver interiors were a slightly different shade. It's sort of has a blueish tint to it .

Re: 60-66 GMC or Chevy, grey interior?
Regarding the question about the firetruck cab being painted red inside.
I don't know if this applies to Chevys, but governments DID get some special things for their vehicles. For instance, we've all seen the Municipal Orange trucks--though I don't know if they changed the interior color on those trucks. I do know this from the Mopar side of the hobby: California Highway Patrol vehicles all had a white steering wheel, regardless of interior or exterior colors--it was so the steering wheel didn't get hot from the sun. My '62 Suburban was an original California Parks and Services vehicle--4-speed Granny, Dana 44 axle with 3.90 Posi, coil spun suspension, middle seat only with fixed rearmost side windows. They also put on a police-style push-bar on the front bumper. All indications are the 4-speed was original to the trans--the handle came out at the same angle as the round-knob handles, but then it bends straight up to the ceiling, and has an upright shift "knob" that is more like the handle of a bull dozer's stick. It's black Bakelite, about six inches tall, and screwed onto the threads of the shifter handle. Handle was never heated and bent--it came that way. I don't have access to it right now for pics. Knowing what I do about the CHP cars, I wouldn't be surprised if all of their trucks were spec'd to have that shifter. -Brad
