78 Scottsdale 2wd

I found a 1978 Scottsdale earlier this year. Here is the story, with some progress posts to follow:

The truck was purchased new at a local chevrolet dealership. Optioned with the 350, automatic, rally wheels, and air conditioning.

The same fella had the truck until about 1999-2000. He took the truck to a local body shop, after purchasing all new GM sheetmetal for the whole truck. The truck was nicely put together, and painted a nice grey color. About a year after the paintjob he popped the motor and sold the truck to a friend of mine, who pulled the motor, and sat the truck in his barn for about 15 years.

I picked the truck up, and got a fresh 327 w/350 heads and an RV cam ready to go into it. I still have the 350 that came in the truck from the factory, but I'm waiting to built it up a bit later.

Got the truck home and in the garage, and got started on installing my 5/7 drop (Spindles springs shocks, flip kit, shackles) new brakes, new brake lines, and a few other odds and ends.

hood off. lol

The body is REALLY straight on this thing:

Re: 78 Scottsdale 2wd

Got the front suspension, brakes, and brakes lines done first.

Then I got the motor in, and started hanging accessories:

Interior is next on the list. Here it is now:

I spent too much time on the website, and decided to change the interior color.

She will be ALL buck-skin tan. Carpet, doors, dash, belts and visors. I've sourced a set of factory C10 buckets and console for the truck as-well.

Really clean looking truck. Nice choice going with the tan, I think it'll compliment the exterior color nicely. Looking forward to seeing it after the 5/7 drop.

Thanks man!

I really think the tan will pop. The bench seat has great springs and padding, so I think I will also do a tan/light grey horse blanket pattern cover on it so I can swap back and forth between buckets and bench.

It's the little things. lol

She'll be making her rounds in 2017 for sure. I'm taking some vacation time for Nats so I can hang all weekend. I've got a booth worth of stuff for the swap meet also!

Man, the stance and tires and wheels pretty much dated it. That's a sweet find, going to make a really nice ride.

Re: 78 Scottsdale 2wd

Dropped my Rally Wheels off to be blasted and powder coated yesterday. I'm going to run 15x8's for a while, until I can afford to snag some 15x10's for the rear. I've read a bit about those being tough to get, so I'm not going to worry about it until the truck is on the road for a season and I've got most of the bugs worked out.

Should get tires mounted this weekend and be ready to sit it on the ground next week.

It's crazy how difficult it is getting the motivation to go out and turn wrenches after working all day and then doing stuff with the kids.. I don't know how some of you guys do it!

I'm way past my personal deadline for this truck to be on the road though, so it's crunch time. Just a few things to button-up and I'll have some updates!

Re: 78 Scottsdale 2wd

Well I've made some progress the last few weeks.

Got the interior cleaned up, sound deadener down, new dash and door panels, carpet, and a sweet seat cover on the bench. Going to throw the seat back in this week and get my new seatbelts in.

As for the drop, it is sitting on the ground finally. I still need to install the notch to give myself a little extra travel in case I throw the motorcycle in the back someday.

I ran into some **** with the motor and had to make a couple of changes, parts were ordered, wrenches were thrown... but it should be running and driving soon!!

Re: 78 Scottsdale 2wd

So i bent all of my exhaust pushrods when I was trying to fire it up.

I had to do some stuff to figure out why, but it seems as though the exhaust valves are about .0100 shorter than the intake valves, which caused the rocker to bottom out on the valve seal and bend the exhaust pushrods...

****ing weird... I didn't put the motor together, it just came with the truck and had supposedly been "gone through" recently... Oh well, I've got some new pushrods coming and some .050 retainers that should give me the clearance I need for my cam.

Getting closer, this is the fun part I guess.

Re: 78 Scottsdale 2wd

My seat choice has changed due to being out of money. lol I want to do the buckets eventually so i did nice carpet and stuff, but just put a cool cover on the bench for now to get things moving.

Re: 78 Scottsdale 2wd

Interior color is "Saddle" for door panels, dash, belts, visors, and carpet. And the brown/tan saddle seat blanket.

I had a HUGE box of sound deadener... kinda thought I would be able to do behind the door panels with an XL box of stinger extreme... alas I couldn't even get the whole floor pan completely covered :-(

Oh well. The difference will still be night and day when it comes to road noise and heat, so I'm still happy with what I've done.

Re: 78 Scottsdale 2wd

Glad to see it is coming along. I am anxious to see a completed interior shot. The saddle should look good against the dark grey.
