Steering Column

I think my 71 steering column is wore out - it's an automatic and the gear selector is very loose. You can't hardly feel the gear stops for reverse, neutral, drive. Is this a bushing issue that can be rebuilt or should I just find another column?

Re: Steering Column

First step would be to have someone operate the shifter while you watch the linkage detents at the base of the column. Watch for complete engagement of the detents. In addition compare your column to pictures of similar ones. It is possible that something has come loose and just needs to be tightened back up. Do some searches as there are several great threads on column teardown and repair. My Burban had a similar issue and it ended up just being the lower bushing for the shifter linkage inside the column was crusty and prevented complete movement. Half day to remove and clean and reinstall and i was back in business. No parts needed!
Good luck

Re: Steering Column

There are a number of bushings in the column and the attached shift linkage. When I took mine apart I think I found 3 or 4 bushings that were gone because they wore out. A rebuild certainly helped mine.

I'm not 100% sure on this part, but I also think inside the trans there are shift parts that could wear out.
