Blew a tire
Was crusing on the interstate at 70 mph and heard a loud bang. My '83 K-10 started pulling hard left. I cranked hard on the wheel to keep it somewhat straight and began slowing down. Once I got in the median I inspected the damage. My driver's front tire split from the bead on the outersidewall perpendicular to the tread to an inch ornso from the inner sidewall. The belt beat my inner fender to crap as well as the front of my rocker panel. It also ejexted my beauty ring to who onows where. Tire was a 33x12.50R15 BFG KM2 with ~25-30k miles on it. Anyone seen a tire do this?

Re: Blew a tire
I'll have to check but I did buy them late November or early December of 2012 so I think 95 S Trucker is right on the manufacturing date.

Re: Blew a tire
The only BFG recall I could find was from 2015 and was only for all season, commerical all season, and what ever the rugged trail is. No MTs or ATs. Thinking I must have hit something

Re: Blew a tire
Tires won't last 6 years here. 4 is about the average life before dry rot sets in. I've researched it and came to the conclusion it's generally the sun (UV) and not so much the heat that gets em. I had a brand new set that was kept in the dark in storage that looked great but the tire shops refuse to mount them if their over 4 years old for liability reasons.

Re: Blew a tire
Tires suck. I've had so many blow up over the years I've lost count. Most of them just blow up sitting outside in the heat. The worst one happened on my International rollback several years ago. It took out the front clip and twisted the bumper like a pretzel. I say tires are good for about 6 years, after that you should put them on the short list for replacement.

Re: Blew a tire
Tires that won't last over 4 years should be outlawed. How criminal can it get? Especially when we have 20 year or more older tires that will out last them. Take a little something too much out of the ingredients there Mr Beancounter?
I have never had a tire blow the casing due to age anyway, and the tires are not aged out. But I have had casing issues with BFG on a couple trucks. I'm not a big fan of possibly the most popular tire company with a good reputation. I have had the tread wrap around the side like a pretzel due to failed casing on a couple occasions years apart on different sets. I had and old set of A/Ts (35/12.50-16) where the left front tread blew due to age. I only ran them maybe 500 miles. Bought the set for the wheels but figured "what the heck" and ran the tires while new tires were coming. I was only doing 50 or so on a 2-lane. The strands slapped the rocker in, scratched the fender up, and peeled the upper rear corner of the front trim piece on my '72. 2/3 of the tread blew off and it was still holding air

Re: Blew a tire
AtomicYJ, if it makes you feel any better, the tire was worn out anyway. (it's definitely worn out now!)
Special-K the tire industry has been discussing making mandatory expiration dates on tires for a long time now. The last I read, the consensus was 10 years. It'll be a nightmare if they ever do it, they probably will. |

Re: Blew a tire
I've never had a problem with any any BFGs I've ever run on any of my vehicles until now. I had three sets on my old YJ. A set on my CJ-5, and this set on my K-10.
I was hoping to wear this set out until I move in a couple months, but that's not to be. I already ordered a new set of tires and they should be in tomorrow. Since these are better than my current spare I'll keep the best one as a new spare. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Blew a tire
My problems were on trucks, never lighter SUVs or trucks that didn't haul. I know guys who use them hauling weight, but I see them as a fun 4wd tire, not for work...based on my own experiences.

Re: Blew a tire
That type of failure started with an injury. Whether you knew it or not you hit something. That localized failure indicates a direct injury to that spot.

Re: Blew a tire
The pressure was about 34 lbs in each of the other three tires. I was wondering if Inhit something or something hit the tire. The hole on the outer sidewall seems off to me.
Either problem is resolved. Put a new set of BFG ATs on it and kept the best MT as a full size spare Posted via Mobile Device |
