Aftermarket winsheild washer and column stalk

Installed a after market windshield washer and would like to use the stalk on the 87 C10 Van tilt column. Just a positive and a ground but not sure a relay is needed as stalk wires are like 20 gauge.

Re: Aftermarket winsheild washer and column stalk

I'll assume the "stalk" is the turn signal lever. If it's 20-gauge wire and a motor is involved - to be safe - I'd ground the ground and use a relay to switch the hot side. If you want to do an analysis in hopes of getting by without the relay, start by determining the current requirements of the aftermarket washer motor. (With wire that small I'd still use a relay, regardless of the findings.)

Re: Aftermarket winsheild washer and column stalk

My column was installed by someone else and unsure if power is getting to stalk wires. The ignition, horn and turn signals work fine. The stock 84 GMC K10 harness was reused complete with fuse box and the column wiring is connected to it. Ive identified the pink and white stalk wires as the washer motor. Neither has power. There is black heavier wire with male spade end sticking out of the column and has its own sliding sheath. Wonder if this is the power and where it plugs into. If i can figure out washer connections i would add a relay.

I' go with a relay at any rate. Less amps going through the switch. You will probably end up hunting down a good wiring diagram for the donor truck to figure out how to wire it up

Re: Aftermarket winsheild washer and column stalk

I tried to ohm out the wiper arm of my 86 s10 column w/o any results. I believe it works with the wiper control module

Use the 20 ga wire as the relay trigger wire. Depending on now the washer is wired you can use it to close the power or ground side of the relay.

Re: Aftermarket winsheild washer and column stalk

This is plug in question. Thru T&E i found it has 4 connections one of which is the washer. Anyone have a pic where this plugs into the original harness?

FWIW this plus has 4 connections 2 on either side separated by a thin insulator--- had me going for quite a while.

That the lever that looks like this one? I'm thinking that one fits a good number of 87 and later vehicles. https://www.carparts.com/details/Che...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

That might help finding a wiring diagram

Re: Aftermarket winsheild washer and column stalk

The diagrams are confusing. just looking to see where this plug goes into the harness plugs. MAy have to visit a junkyard as 87 vans are rare aroung here. If all else fails i may just wire relay directly to the pair that operates the push button on the stalk end.

Re: Aftermarket winsheild washer and column stalk

I dug out one of my old GM troubleshooting guides and didn't find much except that GM wiper motors with the washer pump on them have a relay meaning that you will want a relay to operate the washer pump. I'm not sure if I kept the column out of my son's 89 Elcamino when he totaled it but may have cut the wires long enough to figure it out if I did. It was pretty bent in the wreck.

Re: Aftermarket winsheild washer and column stalk

Thought about you and that wet weather down there this morning when I dug this one out of the cupboard because I left my regular mug in the boat yesterday.

Having a cup on the deck this morning. Can see about 20 miles up and down coast. Bright blue ocean, Light breeze, few whitecaps sun breaking thru clouds. Might get up to 68 today. Everyday is a day at the beach here.

Next time in Bandon don't forget to visit the candy shop and stuff your face with free samples.

Still wondering how the stalk plug goes into the remainder of the 84 gmc harness. Guess i might still make push button on stalk end operate squirters and forget about wiper or cruse control.

68 Sounds great right now, it is going to be another one of those 100+ days here.
