vintage air install question

just got a vintage gen iv and was wondering how you all ran you heat/cooling lines, I smoothed my fire wall for a clean look and really dont want to go through the fire wall in the engine bay.I was thinking of running the lines under the fender well then through the fresh air vent cavity , then pull through the vent kick pannel then to the evaporator. Has anyone does something like this? always open to suggestions. thanks , Mike

Re: vintage air install question

On my '51 I went under the inner fender from the front and into the cab under dash high in the kick panel area. I also made my own bracket for the compressor mounting below the heads. It cleans it up nicely so one can seamlessly enjoy the nostalgiia of the truck without distraction.
You will possibly need a few different fittings with different bends and longer hoses but easily do-able. Get some zip ties and some heater hose and try some mockups.

thanks so much, how did you go into the cab? did use just push the hoses through a rubber gromet or did you use a ac bulkhead with screw on fittings. If you used a bulk head I would image you had to make a larger opening of the vent area to tighten up the fittings?

Re: vintage air install question

the 5th gray line is all the wiring for the front lights, ac and fan. 2 wires behind the distributor are temp sensor and starter

I used 4 grommets sized accordingly. It is all hidden from view with the upholstery.

Re: vintage air install question

vintage air sells grommets and it may work to your advantage to go through the kick panel. I used two mini vintage air systems on the last couple trucks and for whatever reason they like the fittings to come out the SIDE of the system, pointing at the kick panel, all 4 connections. if you tried to go through the firewall like I did you would need a 90 degree turn, and thats harder to plan length for and can pull the grommet this way or that.

does electricity flow more efficiently in a hose than a wire?

Thats how i did my 67 , remember to seal it well at the firewall , and your kick pannel , otherwise the fan pulls from that side and pulls hot air from the engine compartment , ask me how i know

Re: vintage air install question

I also smoothed my firewall and didn’t want a bulkhead to show. It went through the kick panel area, the hoses are in the wheel well and come in as low as possible on the passenger side inner fender.

Re: vintage air install question

I'm running mine through the fenderwell. See the 4 holes to the left in first pic and the manifold in the 2nd pic. Hoses will be "grommeted" coming through the firewall, and I made a u-shaped bracket to hold them close to the inner fender. The small hole in the center of the 4 holes is for the trinary switch wiring. The bracket and the dryer are mounted on welded-on studs on the tire side of the inner fender (not shown).

NOTE: Checkered flag in pic is only masked. No paint yet. It will be a ghost flag when done, I hope. New territory for me.

Thanks, slammed. Shot the copper pearl this morning. Unmasked. I don't want to hijack the thread, so I'll just say, see the "What did you do with your truck today, part 3" thread in a couple of days.
