1972 Hood damage and question
OK so I had a little hood mishap. The fan blade let go, I have 4 of the five blades, they are pretty crumpled up. Part of the fan mounting flange is still under the bolts against the fan clutch. This is a 90s truck serpentine setup. I’ve begun my search for parts and a replacement hood. The mechanicals are going to be easy, fan, shroud, radiator and heater hoses, trans cooler lines, battery should cover most of it. I’ll need to splice together the wiring harness. Looks like my RnD fabrication radiator is OK. I’m going to start looking for an original equipment hood. My question is, are the reproduction hoods any good these days? I know they have not been good in the past. Is anyone making a great repop?? Second question for the factory restorers, did the underside of the hood come body color or black, I painted mine black then I did the frame off, will go with factory this time.

Re: 1972 Hood damage and question
Were you just cruising merrily along when this happened? I think about this when I see people grab the throttle linkage with the hood up and rev the crap out of an engine.

Re: 1972 Hood damage and question
Hoods are very easy to find OEM...they are a dime a dozen, everyone saves them and they tend to hold up over time verses a fender.

Re: 1972 Hood damage and question
Oh man that looks bad, could have been so much worse though! Curious, do you know if the fan was a GM original, or aftermarket?
To your second question, the underside of my hood ('72 K20) is the original black. Not as shiny as yours though, maybe flat but probably closer to satin (when new). Yours looks like it might be semi-gloss.

Re: 1972 Hood damage and question
Yikes!!!! I happen to know that will get your attention. In high school I had a 47 International KB5. One day headed off to the woods the fan blade broke off of the mount.(The water pump bearing was a bit loose). BAM! I had a 1" slit in the hood. Immediately BANG, under the truck. I look in the mirror to see what just fell off and I see the fan blade spinning up out of sight never to be found. Somehow the fan didn't touch anything but the hood and the pavement. The upside of not having a shroud to contain the fan.
Hope your radiator is good. Here is a link to a under hood paint discussion from the past. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=352569

Re: 1972 Hood damage and question
So you need misc engine accessory items, a hood, and some new shorts.
An OEM hood should be an easy find. |
