squealing sounds suck
Ok, well i had a squealing noise coming from the engine when i'd give it gas a while back, and i've been running it like this for a while now.. my dad checked it out, and said it was the fan clutch, so i buy a new direct drive fan and put it on, start it up and it still squeals.. so we take the belt that drives the alternator off, and see if that does it, and surely enough, it doesnt squeal anymore.. go to the parts store and buy a new alternator, put it on, and it still squeals.. the belt isnt lined up, because the bracket on the head thats holding the alternator isnt right, so i think i need a new bracket of some sort.. if anyone has an idea of what i need or a pic of what you have on yours, lemme see if you could or would, i'd appreciate it.. by the way its a 327, i dont know what year it is.. the truck originally came w/ a 454..
so i'm pretty much lost until i can find out what bracket i need that will push the bottom of the alternator out a lil further to aline the belt, etc... thanks, Jeff |

Did you check the water pump or power steering pump? Is the squeal fixed?

Sounds like your belt is slipping when you start it up... Mine does that too when I've been playing my stereo and such while the truck was off. I know my belt is a bit loose though, so it was to be expected

if you have a/c, spray some lube into it.. my truck was like that, god i hated it, so i grabbed a can of WD-40 and sprayed the a/c compresser down... nice and rumbly now with no squeals

its not the water pump or power steering because we took the belt off that goes to the alternator, and started it up, and hit the gas a couple times and there was no squeal anymore.. It's not when i start it up, its a lil at idle, and more when i hit the gas, and we've tightened it like no other, and it still squealed.. I don't have a/c so it couldnt be that.. i'm gonna buy the bracket, and see if that helps

Sounds like the alternator is having some bearing trouble. The bracket might help but I have seen a lot of stock ones not running very true. I have this problem and the belt(s) will fly of if I get on it too much 4600+ but sometimes I get lucky and they stay put. Mainly the alternator belt but sometimes it will smack the ps belt into jumping also but very very rarely it does that. My water pump pulley has two belts running it so its not really that big of a deal if the alternator belt gets scared lol

Forgot to add, If you could post any pictures belt setup / brackets that might help to see what is going on.

if the belt is glossy than you have a slipping belt. Dont tighten it...replace it!
