Broken pushrod dilemma
Need some input with my engine.
bought 71 gmc with 350 that had work done to it 6 years ago before being left behind farmers house. I have receipts from the machine shop from back in the day. when i bought the truck it wasnt running. I got it running poorly 2 weeks ago. You could here the pushrods making noise. I pulled intake and valve covers today and found on Number 4 cylinder, broken push rod on intake and completely missing roller rocker arm on the exhaust. It was taken off by someone, rocker, nut and all, just not there at all. That pushrod was in one piece and not bent. Im thinking at this point to do a bleed down test on that cylinder. Also check to see if lobes for that cylinder on the cam are still good. Any more input would be appreciated. |

Re: Broken pushrod dilemma
Yikes. You are right, I would definitely check the cylinder, and the lobe. Sorry to hear about the mayhem, I hope it turns out to be an easy fix.
Honestly, you might pull the engine. If they half wayed it on the valve train, it makes me question what they did on the bottom end.

Re: Broken pushrod dilemma
I would compression/leak down test all 8 cylinders, but that may not tell the whole story. I suspect Justin is right; you're going to end up pulling that engine and tearing it down. I hope I'm wrong...

Re: Broken pushrod dilemma
Pull the intake and all the rockers , check that all the lifters are moving correctly , check the oil for glitter , if cam is pushing all the lifters the same and the oil has no glitter , put her back together , and give it a go .
