My bet is they are pieces of a broken crank gear. I have done it myself and have watched others do it. Break the gear with a large chisel and hammer, Two good whacks and wha la.
The process is to remove the gear for a chain/gear replacement. Proper way is use a puller
Problem is, how they break. I have never lost a piece but could be possible. Seems heavy to get in the screen but floating in oil, who knows.
