Fuel tank replacement 1963
I need to replace the gas tank on my 1963 chevy shortbed. It's started leaking at the bottom area due to several small rust holes. After lots of reading thru old posts it seems LMC is the preferred vendor for this? Just want a simple replacement type. I will order the sending unit gasket and the rubber fill pipe also. Any tips appreciated.
Thanks Joel |

Re: Fuel tank replacement 1963
When you find the "Gasket"
Tube to body opening (under gas cap) buy two they are cheep and don't hold up... The short hose (on the filler kneck) is a bit trickey to get set right and able to get to the clamps. Every one I have done I've had to "Fine tune the Float' just be prepared to Open the tank More that once for adjustment and Don't worry about hi side it's the low mark EMPTY is what you should be working towards. Most these trucks have "Dancing" gas gauge Because of sloshing in tank ....... and be mindful of the grounds you can never have to many Grounds on an old truck . Did you know the Bed gas tank is almost the same price as the "In cab tank" $140-$175 . .....Sp . . .

Re: Fuel tank replacement 1963
Thanks for the reply. Yea, I did notice the price of the bed tanks. I assume the tanks that LMC sell are good quality?

Re: Fuel tank replacement 1963
I ordered tank, grommet, neck, sending unit gasket and filler hose a few minutes ago from LMC. I'll post back next week when I get it all in. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Fuel tank replacement 1963
I think lmc is kind of like harbour freight. Some things are great others are terrible. The few things I have got from lmc are fine.I'm going with a rear mount gas tank on my 66.I will more than likely get it from brothers or early classic enterprise.

Re: Fuel tank replacement 1963
Factory in-cab tanks are frequently for sale given the popularity of rear tank conversions. My first choice for quality is always going to be a factory part over aftermarket, and in this case they are cheaper too!

Re: Fuel tank replacement 1963
OK. All parts arrived Wednesday around 2:00 PM. For the money I was satisfied with the quality, and everything did come in the same box. Installed the tank today without any major issues. Just a little aggravating doing it by myself. Got a few gallons of gas poured in and no leaks, will add more Friday but should be ok.
