Aux Vacuum pump to assist brakes on '65 C10

The motor in my truck doesn't make enough vacuum because of the cam in it, and the brakes don't work near as well as I'd like them too. I've looked around a little bit, but can't seem to find much anything that would show me what I need to make a good auxiliary vacuum pump system. If anyone here knows about this I'd appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Bill

Have you consider using a Hydroboost system?

X2 - I put an electric vacuum pump on my Chevelle many years ago due to a radical camshaft, and HATED it - crazy loud, even over loud mufflers. Took it off and threw it away after less than a week. Hydroboost is expensive, but really the only way to go.

Re: Aux Vacuum pump to assist brakes on '65 C10

Recently i went through this exact issue on my "69 C10. I tried two types of power boosters, no good. Then i tried a vacuum reservoir again to no fix. So, lets try a vacuum pump. Expensive, extremely loud, and well did not really fix the problem to my satisfaction. So, what now? Well hydro boost here i come. Let me just say that there is a very quite vacuum pump out there, very expensive, but really quite. I decided to take on the Hydro boost. What a great way to get solid, strong brakes. I am hooked. I now have a vacuum pump that is for sale.
PS If you go with Hydro boost, get with CaptFab on here! He has brackets that are just top notch and perfectly constructed.
Good luck with what every way you go.

I put a big cam in my convertible and used a hydroboost system, it has no problems with vacuum.

I had a simliar problem with several cammed motors.
There is an easy and economical solution.
A vacuum Reservoir or commonly called a vacuum reverve canister
They are cheap, easy to install, and effective.

Easy install Just run the vacuum hose from your intake manifold to the tank, and then run a hose from the tank to your power brake booster. That's it.
Go for a ride, apply the brakes several times, and smile.

Here is a link to an install
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OMIzCvYefY

The canister is about $40.00 at Jegs or Sumitt, and the best thing, is that there are no mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical parts to fail, or wear out.

Re: Aux Vacuum pump to assist brakes on '65 C10

Another thought - If you can find it is in the late 70's early 80's GM ran vacuum pumps on some of the Cadillac's & Chevy's, the diesel Olds etc. They mounted the vacuum pumps under the battery tray to help absorb vibration & noise. Since they did use them on Caddys I would think they would have to be fairly quiet but finding a late 70's Caddy might be difficult now.

Re: Aux Vacuum pump to assist brakes on '65 C10

Another possibility - my 2017 Chevy Suburban has a belt driven vacuum pump for the brakes. There's one big serpentine belt for all the other accessories, and a small, separate belt that drives only the vacuum pump.

You would have to fab a mounting bracket, probably put a different pulley on it for a v-belt, etc. But it is silent.

i installed a LEED brake bandit to resolve my issue with this. Its a rotary pump and quiet. A little pricey, but it works well.

Thanks for the reply! What I get will depend on price. I need to get cheap, but good!...LOL The Leed pumps looked good, but I'm kinda thinking about one of the motor powered, maybe hydroboost, or a pulley powered pump. I'll just have to weigh it all out.
