47-55.1 remove tar from underside of cab

Not sure why they did it, but looks like someone coated the passenger side floor of the truck with tar. It doesn't look like there was rust there from the inside of the cab in that area, but wondering how I can go about removing it without removing the cab.
Tried scraping it, but not so sure its the best option. Most of the floor is just light rust so hoping to hit it with a wire wheel and possibly POR15 since I have it on hand.

Somebody I know with a classic TA removed the dealer installed tar coat on the entire bottom of the car to get back to original look of red primer.
He used mineral spirits a scraper and a heat gun.
Took him a month to do the whole car.

I had some on my 50 cab bottom but I sand blasted most of it off and then used mineral spirits for the rest.

Sand blaster gets in places you don't want it to.

I used mineral spirits...when I had mine sandblasted it wouldnt remove the undercoating...they said the undercoating would rebound the media...it only took it off where it was already loose...
heat and a putty knife works fairly good at getting the most of it off..followed by mineral spirits..

Yea, that is what I am working with now, heating up my putty knife then scraping it. Since were stuck inside I guess I have time and will continue.
I don't have a way to remove the cab to have it blasted in my small garage and wasn't planning to tear it all down and paint it.

try a hand pump bottle of varsol or mineral spirits, soak it, let it sit, scrape it. don't do this if the vehicle is in your attached garage or a shop with a heater. I have heard of guys using diesel as well. some kinda solvent that will soften the tar. some engine degreasers also work well. a garden sprayer will also work to spray but you need one that will withstand the petroleum product. I have had luck with superclean from castrol. available in a gallon jug. lay some plastic on the ground before you start, it catches the mist, run off and also the scrapings.

Please take the time to try a needle scaler. If you have to work with rust / dried mud / hard undercoating this tool will be your friend. Solvents dissolve undercoating but leave a mess. Scrapers and chisels can chew up a piece of metal. The needle scaler will vibrate rust or tar right off a surface.

I used dri ice works fast. Put dri ice on cab floor not on undercoat for about 10 mins. remove and give a couple wacks with rubber mallet, undercoating gone.
IT works so slick,saved me a lot of time .

Dry ice, needle scaler, multi-tool - some awesome ideas here!

I took the tarry goo off the inside of my Model A doors by soaking it with WD40. A power tool wouldn't fit in there.

I'm up for trying that. Where do you obtain said dry ice?

It may be a combination of the things that don't create a hazardous situation. That being fumes of flames. The needle scaler is great for multiple coats of industrial paint and heavy rust but I don't know how it will work with undercoating.

Dry ice doesn't cost much and only a couple of precautions need to be made to make sure you don't get freeze burns on your hands. Once that undercoating/tar is frozen stiff that wack on the floor boards should at loosen it up enough to do some serous scraping. I'm liking the idea of that multi tool scraper though. That may pay for it's self on big flat areas real fast.

just seen a thing on tv, welderup, 55 chevy hood,underside, they used dry ice. worked. well, it's tv so who really knows but it SEEMED to work.

Harbor Freight makes a pneumatic gasket scraper for $24. They work pretty well. I build dry ice manufacturing plants. As stated don't touch it, it will burn you. It's -109f. Also use in well ventilated area. Do not put it in your car with windows up, you may pass out. Do not not put it in a sealed container it can explode. If you can source the pellets you could spread them on the floor. Search Continental Carbonic and give them a call. When you open a co2 fire extinguisher The white stuff that comes out AKA "snow" is dry ice.

I used a Needle scaler.
If you choose to go this route and think you will
use the scaler again for welding purposes and other stuff.
Go ahead and get a good one.
The cheap ones have not lasted long for me.

The dry ice sounds promising. I used an angled heavy duty scraper and chipped it off. Flap disc made it worse. Wire wheel didn't work so well either. I think I pounded most of it off. Then sandblasted, then chipped at it some more. I feel for ya...

Thanks for all the replies. I ended up scraping it off. I may pick up that needle scaler for some of the rust. I saw a video of someone using dry ice on the newer tar like sound deadener and it worked great for them, but with the lock down in CA could not get to the grocery store and get some. Maybe next time.
