Question 1991 Suburban 1500 4wd

Not sure if this is legal for a non-paying member, but ...

We're seriously thinking about trading in our old Suburban, so if anyone has any interest in acquiring one of these you might want to let me know in the next few days.

Question Re: 1991 Suburban 1500 4wd

Second question: about how much do y'all think I should get for it on trade for a newer used pickup?

It's only "average" condition at best. Needs a new steering box for sure, plus a bunch of nuisance stuff, but it runs good and driveline is okay as far as I know.

Depends on condition, rust, interior, etc.

Any pics? I looked at a few of your posts and couldn't find a pic of your rig.

Sorry I don't have any pictures right now. I could try to get some if you're still interested.

No body damage except a couple scratches, and a superficial dent on one of the barn doors. It's starting to show a little rust around the edges but I don't think it goes very deep yet. Paint on the roof got thin and I spot sprayed it with rattle cans.

The interior is pretty good except the floor is dirty and the mice have been in there. I'm planning to vacuum it out today but there's a cold wind. Some of the 3rd seat seatbelts are chewed. The AC no longer blows cold and the power windows and locks are acting up.

It definitely needs a new power steering box as it wanders pretty bad. Left rear leaf spring is saggy so it should just have new rear springs. Of course the tilt wheel needs taken apart and those three screws tightened. We keep the oil changed but it's probably overdue on transmission service and repack front wheel bearings.

I just drove it yesterday to charge the battery. It's a 350 TBI with 700r4/4L60. About 228K miles and we did have one head gasket replaced a few years ago as it blew out (exhaust) between #3 and #5. Seems to be okay since then. A long time ago I replaced the "automatic" hubs with Warn manual hubs. I replaced the aluminum wheels with steel rally wheels because one of the original ones cracked. Tires have good tread but are probably past their expiration date.

This was our main vehicle from 2001 until 2008 when we got the little car. Since then a winter time vehicle until we got the Jeep in 2015 when it became a backup 4wd and occasional loaner. If I can get it cleaned up in the next couple days, we're planning to take it to town and see if we can trade it for the 2016 pickup that we are looking at. I had great plans to fix it up but we don't need five running vehicles.

Oh - I just realized you are in Colorado Springs!

I have a house down there that I need to clean out and sell.

Re: 1991 Suburban 1500 4wd

Trading that in is probably going to be the worst, but then you get rid of the problems. It's hard to say, but if you can get a few thousand as a trade-in, that's probably all they are going to offer.

If you can sell it out-right, you might be able to get some more, but then you have to wait it out. And the fact that most people probably aren't going to even look at it until the Covid thing calms down. But the upside is that MT and WY are doing great with the Virus.

Hard to nail down a very good value without seeing it. Rust sure tends to find it's way in all sorts of areas. AC fix, steering box, springs, that all adds up. Probably $2k in repairs right there. Dealer will probably pick it apart. But, that's their job. They'll likely wholesale it off anyways.

I bought my Blazer in Cody (and have been in MT a ton)! Many a drives back and forth to ID/WA. I even had some rust repair done on mine, later to find the exact same location started rusting again! Brother!

Good luck whatever you do. Having a more reliable rig probably sounds good right now. And if you need any help down here, I've done my share of house fixers (wife is a Realtor). Let me know if you need anything.

Stay safe!

Re: 1991 Suburban 1500 4wd

Yeah, "a few thousand" is the best I can expect from anyone. For some reason the dealers seem to like trade-ins and they seem to like to give you more money for some piece of junk than come down on the asking price.

Back in 2001 when we bought this Suburban, we had a rusty 1977 2wd. I figured it wasn't worth much of anything and didn't even drive it to the dealer. We haggled a bunch and they offered me $3500 allowance sight unseen for a Suburban that we had only paid $1500 for 11 years previous. I told them it was rough, but they said "oh, no problem - bring it in on Monday." When we dropped it off, the sales manager said "well, you didn't lie about it being rough, did you?" But sometimes I wish that I had kept it just for parts. It had a good engine and a good four speed.

I'm not trying to make any money off of anyone on this forum, but before I traded it off I figured I'd see if anyone wanted a project. I really don't know if it is worth even $2K ? But it is a solid axle square body.

Oh, and I have a realtor already - a gal I went to high school with. Her mom and my mom worked switchboard together way back then. Coincidentally, her mom passed away 10 days before mine!

Um... you don't happen to know a good used furniture buyer, do you?

Awesome, as long as you got someone down here, that's great!

Used furniture places:
Platte Furniture
Consign and Design (Only nice stuff)

Depending on price range and location, the market is still great (except for the barrier of trying to show homes now). Good luck!

Apparently, she is selling houses based on video tours! I would never want to buy a place that way.

The house is just off North Academy Blvd / Union. There's a nice dining room set and some dressers that should be worth something.
