'66 lower control arm attachment advice, please
'66 3/4 ton 2WD. Need advice on what my front end should have. Didn't get a "before" pic to show what I had.
The LMC parts drawing below shows part 19, brackets, and part 21, U-bolts. I'm trying to figure out where these go, and if I need them at all. The shop manual does not show them unless I'm missing it (which I have been known to do ) It appears that some 1/2" Grade 8 bolts are what hold the shaft to the frame, per my temporary fit below. It this OK as is, or do I need the caps and U-Bolts? If so, where do they fit into the equation? Thanks! |

The U-bolts are for a C10 lower control arm shaft which are round, not flat as the C20 and C30 LCA shafts are. What I would change is use a all steel locking nut instead of the plain nuts. That is how the factory installed them.

Thank you! With a C-20 I don't need the U-bolts etc.
You're saying the split lock washers (and blue Loc-tite on the threads) isn't the way to go? If it matters, the truck will be used for cruising not for competition or heavy hauling. |

Re: '66 lower control arm attachment advice, please
I didn't seen the split locks or the locktite. Looked like just flat washers to me. I just like all steel lock nuts for something important like that. If you want to leave them as is, I would suggest checking them frequently after you get it on the road for the first few thousand miles. Not being for competition use has no bearing on whether they may come loose or not. Public roads can be hard on vehicles. It would not be a good day if one of those came apart at 70mph.

Re: '66 lower control arm attachment advice, please
Actually those may be regular lock washers not Grade 8 in the pics, and the blue loc-tite would go on for final assembly. This is a test fit so you are correct.
I agree, things do loosen up and periodic checking of anything critical is excellent advice. Thank you! |
