Power Steering Pump Pulley Removal
I have a 1972 GMC pickup with AC and was wondering how to remove the pulley wheel from the pump. I removed the outside nut but was wondering do I need a wheel puller to remove the second nut that looks pressed into the wheel?

Re: Power Steering Pump Pulley Removal
It makes it easier if you have a puller something like this.

Re: Power Steering Pump Pulley Removal
Go to an auto parts store (Advance Auto, O'reilly's, etc) and borrow one of their loaner pully remover kits. Easy to do.

Re: Power Steering Pump Pulley Removal
It looks like a press on pulley on a tapered shaft pump. There's no nut on the press on pulley pumps. Des the pulley wobble when you spin it?

Re: Power Steering Pump Pulley Removal
No taper, but the early pumps had a key way. Not all of them are pressed, but still may require a puller because of age and rust

Re: Power Steering Pump Pulley Removal
I don't remember any GM pumps of this era having tapered shafts either.. If it has a nut on the end of the shaft, the pully is a slip fit and it, along with the shaft, has a keyway for a half moon key.. The shaft may be a bit stuck due to age and an accumulation of rust.. A proper puller should pull it off easily...

Re: Power Steering Pump Pulley Removal
Yes it has a keyway and there is no taper. By the way I did get a loaner tool from NAPA and it came off quite easily. Thanks to everyone! Happy St. Paddy's Day!
