If (And it is a big if) the new column is using factory colors for the wiring then a light gray wire may be for illumination of the shift indicator. It would splice into the dash light circuit.
The factory column used a fiber optic cable to light the shifter but the aftermarket may not. This is just a assumption I made from my desk here in Oregon. Good luck.
