Help with firing order real quick!!

I just did a ton of work to the truck today, including changing the wires. (HEI)Being anxious I didn't verify where the number 1 plug was on the cap. All of my manuals show the round cap and not the squarish cap. I saw a diagram once, but can't seam to find it. I killed the battery trying to start it, so I want to verify the order before i dig in too deep. I think the number 2 wire goes right next to the electrical connection, then 1, 8 so on. Can someone verify this for me?? Pictures are easier than anything.

By the way I didn't mess with the Dizzy itself, just changed passenger manifold (thanks bisquick65), exhaust gaskets, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil, and oil filter and new K&N air filter.

I verified the connections to the cap were good and correct voltage was present. My battery might be so screwed that it could just not be getting enough juice. Every sinc that jump catastrophe it has had a hard time starting.

Looking at it from the top.....

Square place where the little electrical wires plug in, going clockwise is 2,1,8,4,3,6,5,7

Basically, skip the first terminal after the plug deal and start the next one as number 1.

Thanks TX, that's what I thought. I have it wired correctly, I think it just needs a serious boost. I think I screwed up the battery the other day, damn it was an optima too. I'll have to dig in a little bit.

I fixed the problem, but it was kinda wierd. i got the timing light out and marked the balancer, unhooked the vaccum advance, but couldn't find the mark at all once I got the truck jumped (wife came home). It kept sounding like the timing was too far advanced or retarded, really hard to start. I hadn't messed with the dizzy position at all. I double checked the wires again, and they were right. I hooked the timing light up again and finally found my timing mark on the other side of the water pump!!!! WTF. I had to rotate the dizzy pretty far clockwise to get it to 10deg. BDC. When I got it there the truck fired right up and sounds great. Very responsive and very quiet. I had set the timing about a month ago, but the dizzy hadn't walked. Where I ended up putting it was way farther rotated than any other time I've set the timing. Any one else ever had this problem after changing out plugs and wires??

you must have instld. the wires 1 location counter clockwise from previous instl.. it really doesn't mater where you start with #1 wire, as long as it is the same terminal as the rotor (dizzy) is pointing at. And #1 cylinder must be at (or just before) TDC. Then as previously noted, instl the rest following the 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 order

It all seems very strange to me. I installed them where they were last time. But I think I found part of the problem. I took it for a drive and it ws missing badly and backfiring through the carb. I took it home and looked, and #! spark plug was putting on a light show. Somehow I got a bad sparkplug. You could see the sparks inside the porcelin(spell?). I removed the spark plug and looked at it and it looks O.K. from the outside, no cracks. I put an old sparkplug on and she runs perfect. Spins the tires with no problem from a light and all the backfiring stopped. just goes to show you that you can't always trust new sparkplugs.
