Toyota steering box on 55-59 truck?

My grandpa was at a car show and was talking to a guy with a 57 chevy truck. He said that a Toyota steering box fit right in and worked. Does anyone have pictures or input on this to convert it to power steering?

I doubt anyone will be doing the Toyota box conversion anymore since CPP introduced their 400 box earlier this year.

I've bought the 400 for my '57. So far, I've only mocked it up in place.

I haven't heard of any Yota box failures. I think they were getting difficult to find, though.

Not worried about a failure at all, and they were getting hard to find, just saying the one from CPP is an upgrade because of the way it fits.

The ford truck guys have been using them, the stock steering is like ours, box inside the frame behind the axle. Like said the box an 80's or early 90's and they are getting scarce, that is why CCP made theres. I read somewhere that mid 90's chevy truck boxes are mounted the same way and will work, but have not been ambitious enough to do more research.

Ahhh.... ok. It does look nice in the photos.

Mounted same way as in bolts through frame parallel to Pitman shaft? No. Unfortunately, the bolts are perpendicular like most of the '70s and '80s GM boxes.

Re: Toyota steering box on 55-59 truck?

So I put the CPP 400 power steering box in my 56 Chevy 4x4 that's almost finished. As it is now, it's got way too much play. Checked Camber, Caster and
toe and all set to spec for an early 80's 10 bolt in a K10. Using a late 70's
Ford F250 steering arm with all new tie rod ends and ball joints.

Have good thrust angle in the rear, front camber is 1 deg. Caster is 6 deg.
both sides and have .12 toe in. Goes all over the road and isn't safe the way
it is. Thinking of changing to a later K10 box and mount outside of the frame
and in front of the axle. Concerned the left tire will hit the box on sharp
right turns. Only running 31 x 10.5 x 15 tires though. Any suggestions?

Re: Toyota steering box on 55-59 truck?

i think you may have too much caster for a power steering box. check out a chevy / ford 4x4 and see what they have for caster on a 4x4

Re: Toyota steering box on 55-59 truck?

Thanks for the reply, my axles are GM 10bolt out of an 80's K10 and those are
the specs I was using. Caster range spec for those is 5.5 to 7 degs. On
other threads I read with GM 10 bolts and Dana 44's most guys aim for 6 degs.
One thing I need to look at is my steering arm rotates in an arch, goes up
turning left and down turning right. Wonder if it should have a mounting
angle to keep it at the same height through its arch.

Also installed a dual steering stabilizer, doesn't seem to help. Truck is almost finished other than installing different wheels and K02 tires.

Here's a picture of the CPP 400 steering box. I've re-routed and changed the hoses to get them away from the headers and wrapped the rest of the header too.

Re: Toyota steering box on 55-59 truck?

Those Toyota boxes are near impossible to find used around here. Either the trucks that have them have been beat to death or the guys still running those trucks off road have horded the parts and parts donors.

Somewhere in our archives is the thread by the gent in Africa who put a Toyota box on his truck that seemed to work out great.

If I remember right I priced them out when I was reading his thread and rebuilt ones in the US are rather pricy and new ones are real pricy.

As far as 1957Napcofan's steering problem. I think that needs a new thread of it's own.
There are too many possible factors going on there to want to take up space on this thread.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Agreed! It's a great install. It would be rewarding to get it working correctly.

Re: Toyota steering box on 55-59 truck?

nice clean project, great attention to detail. I love seeing painted stuff. nothing against the patina look, I just love the finished look. I drove patina for too long, because I couldn't afford paint, and it was good and all but now I wanna paint my projects.
curious if you have thought about a tin heatshield for the steering box, or take a temp on the box after driving. nothing deteriorates fluids and rubber/teflon seals like good old fashioned heat. I know the headers are wrapped but it's still pretty close quarters.

Yes I plan on making a metal heat shield. Since it's not drivable the way it is
that's a future project. Have about 3000 hours in it so far.
