64 GMC 1000 rear brakes
HELP !
I have a stock Dana rear end with leaf springs. I ordered all the parts for the rear brakes but they are not correct. My self adjusters are too short and the bar for the parking brake will not clear the backing plate. What am I missing here ? I am at my wits end and every supplier swears they are sending what I need. |

Chaser:
GMC uses a Dana 44 which is different than a 64 Chevy. It's likely they are sending you Chevy parts assuming they are the same. Dana 44 's were used in a lot of Jeeps. You may have better results ordering your parts through 4x4 suppliers who are familiar with those differentials. Hope that helps. Regards Steve New Orleans |

Re: 64 GMC 1000 rear brakes
The only parts that were there were two brake shoes, the adjuster and three springs. The rest of the parking brake and self adjuster parts were missing.

Re: 64 GMC 1000 rear brakes
I found one strut bar and the Self-Adjusting brake actuators.
I will PM you the numbers and links. They are hard to find and not cheap Last edited by gmc jr van; 03-12-2023 at 03:23 AM. |

Re: 64 GMC 1000 rear brakes
For some reason, I dont have enough tension to put the self adjuster to its proper position. like the yellow rod is too long or something. Ill post a picture of what I started with and you will see what little I had to start with.I have already purchased two cross bars for the parking brake and neither are even close.I have had this truck for several months and this is all that is keeping it in the garage after sitting for 34 years,it runs great just need to get it outside to clean out the mouse crap and take out the tank to be flushed and the seat. You cant safely take a breath inside the cab. I think I will chop on the ones I have since I cant return them to Canada as they were reproduced for me when I purchased them.I am about ready to jerk the whole rear end out and swap it for something I can gets parts for.

Re: 64 GMC 1000 rear brakes
Does the truck have a parking brake on the driveshaft? That would explain some of the missing parts. In that day, a lot of vehicles didn't have self-adjusting brakes, which could explain those parts missing. Looking forward to pics.

Re: 64 GMC 1000 rear brakes
My push rods and crossbar are different, crossbar has to have an offset to clear the backing plate and the push rods are notched to fit around the brake shoes. My parking brake, which only had the under dash lever and brackets on the crossmember, has cables with two bolts into the backing plate not a hole the cable clips into. This must be a rare set up as very few people understand what I am trying to explain LOL, story of my life, I always end up with the oddball stuff.
Thanks for all the help for sure! |

Re: 64 GMC 1000 rear brakes
What are “My push rods”? list the group number in the PDF.
The cables have two part numbers. 2457046 81” and an Interchange Part Number: 2444402 82”. EBay has them, they are listed as 1965 Chevrolet Ser.10 1/2 T Truck w/ Leaf Springs . Last edited by gmc jr van; 03-15-2023 at 08:56 PM. |

Re: 64 GMC 1000 rear brakes
The yellow rod should be 5 11/16 O.L.
You have the wrong brake Adjusting Actuator Levers. Look at the adjuster in the PDF and look at the pictures. The gmc part numbers are 5464208 and 5464209. 1965-1966 chevy 10 with leaf spring 5464917 stamp 5464208 L , 5464918 stamp 5464209 R Oldsmobile 5464697 and 5464698 stamp 5464208 and 5464209.
