3 on the tree floor shifter conversion for a 65

I just recently joined and purchased a 65 C10, of coarse I’m in the process of restoration but wanted to know if anyone has put in a floor shifter instead of the 3 on the tree. How is the reliability and which did you use. I’m sure this has been discussed but I didn’t see it in 60-66 section thanks.

There’s a couple links in there for the same shifter he has or the more expensive hurst master shift. The master shift also requires a kit. An extra 150 bucks. Master shift is a far superior shifter though.
Just remember that a new floor shifter won’t make your shifting shorter, just smoother.

I used a Hurst shifter on my '64 way back when that was called a "Mystery Shifter". It was a high quality shifter. The shift shafts that protrude thru the side cover being round had to have notches filed into them for the clamp bolts for the shifter arms. Lots of filing!
I wonder if Hurst still makes it?
On my next one I installed a later three speed from a 72 or so truck & went to the junkyard & got a Muncie shifter from a wrecked Camaro. It was ok but not the quality of the Hurst.

I used a Hurst Indy Truck shifter on mine (it was fro a 69 truck since I had a 69 tranny). To me it was way better than the column shifter and miles ahead of the cheapo shifters.

My 62 came with a 3 speed Saginaw out of a 69 Camaro or Nova, with sincromesh.also Floor shifter is integrated, it works really well with the truck.

That is the key here, you really want the later full synchro 3 speed from the late 60's or early 70's. The driveability is much much better.Just relocating to the floor doesn't solve the clash issue these non synchro 3 speeds are notorious for. Never done the conversion but it does require some mods. The bellhousing hole needs to be enlarged or replaced with a late 60's bell. The driveshaft may need to be shortened and parking brake cable?

I'm going with the Indy shifter as well, after some searching it seems to be the best way to go.

Ever thought of using a T5? It adds overdrive and is a very smooth shifter - can be made to look darn near stock too (if you want it to). If you think you might consider it, might want to stay as a 3 OTT until you decide (that way only ONE new hole in your floor ). It's a great swap and there are several threads on here about how to do it. Here's my thread Member lugnutz also has a lot of good T5 info on here.

This was the T5 setup in my 66 looked like - I did go with a chrome stick and the ol white cue ball, but I almost painted the stick black and patina'ed it up and and topped it with a black bakelite knob. So many trucks, so little time... Ha.

All new to me,this is my first Chevy truck and only had it for a little over a month. Driven it several times and the 3on three is cool but not for me, going to definitely check out the thread and the T5...thanks!

I put in the T5 5 speed (with lots of help from folks on this site) and it was well worth it. Full synchro and overdrive. I have my old 3 speed if anyone needs one.

Has anyone gone from a 3 speed floor shifter back to 3 on the tree on a 66 Chev c10?
I see there are kits to don this for automatics but how about a 3 speed manual kit?

Far as I know, no one reproduces any of the 3 on the tree parts. So you'll need to have the originals or find someone who has the column stuff, but not using it.
