What Do You Think It is Worth?
Hello this is my 1st post. I have already learned a lot looking through the posts. I anticipate coming back often looking for advice.
My son recently purchased a 1972 C10 and I'm curious what other people think it is worth. He got it for $6K. We have a history of working on his vehicles together and I'm sure we will be putting in some work on this one. The Truck runs and drives with no issue. The truck originally had a 350 but it was replaced with a 283 at some point. The truck has a TH350 automatic transmission that was recently rebuilt by a reputable shop. The paint looks original. There is some rust in the cab corners and rocker panels. The truck has a small dent in the back of the bed on the passenger side. The truck came with the original 1972 plates which my son thought was cool. I thought they were cool too. The only issue with the truck is the smell of gas in the cab. We are planning on replacing the sending unit gasket and all hoses attached to the gas tank to see if that will fix the issue. Last edited by Jason Bourne; 11-29-2023 at 10:11 PM. |

Re: What Do You Think It is Worth?
Congratulations ! Your son has good taste compared to the ones by me. It’s obvious it’s worth 6K to him.

Re: What Do You Think It is Worth?
A '72 C10 would have been equipped with a vapor control system. Is there a canister with hoses on it near the battery? The 283, if it includes that engine's carburetor, may not be plumbed for the closed system. Go here and download the manual for your year truck. It'll have the information you need.
https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...ghlight=hatzie As for what it is worth, that looks about right.

Re: What Do You Think It is Worth?
Interesting truck. I don't see a "bling" code, but they threw all the moldings on that, which I suppose includes the window trim. But then they threw a painted bumper on it anyway, hmm Seems like a fair deal.

Re: What Do You Think It is Worth?
I would not worry about that right now. It has other issues I’m sure need attention for safety sake. Father Son projects are great for two reasons. Bonding and learning new skills together. I look back and wish my father would have taught me more about working on stuff but he was just too busy. You two have a great platform to create a real American icon. Just takes imagination and determination. Greatest skills known to man…sorry to get off topic.

Welcome to the best truck board on the 'net! You won't find a better-informed group of helpful folks anywhere.
I can't hazard a guess as to the value of your son's truck, but if he likes it, the price was about right. It's great that you will both be working on it!

A bum hose, canister vacuum diaphragm or cracked canister can affect performance. And if you smell fumes in the garage it probably needs a new/rebuilt tested canister. There's a thread nearby discussing an option using a replacement canister. They don't make the old 1971-72ish cans anymore.

Re: What Do You Think It is Worth?
I'd say the price was fair for today's market.
Cool truck; the rust will more than likely be worse that what you see, sadly. |

Re: What Do You Think It is Worth?
Nice ride looks like my first truck I bought in '80. Gave $ 1000 from your pics the trucks are about the same condition. Good find in today's market.

Re: What Do You Think It is Worth?
Hi Neighbor!
I do like that color combo! The plumbing for the canister isn't all that complicated. It is teed off the PVC line and then the other line is to one of the ported connections to the carb. Which from your engine photo I can see the PCV line (that's the big one from the front of the carb to the driver's side valve cover) isn't teed to the canister. Even if it was the canister would very likely need to be pulled to be replaced or recharged (I recharged my, its a PITA but can be done). Just don't break it, it is even more of a PITA to replace the canister with a correct period one. Don't ask me how I know that ;-) Though checking those gas lines in the cab is a good thing to check. Actually all the gas lines should be checked IMO, there are little ones under the cab too, so don't miss those! Welcome to the forums! Here is a flip for your cab photo ;-)

Re: What Do You Think It is Worth?
Nice truck. In South Florida where I’m at 6K is a fair price, it may go 9-10K to the right person. Long bed & rust/body hurt.

Re: What Do You Think It is Worth?
The window trim only comes with trim levels Custom Deluxe and up. The side trim came with the deluxe 2-tone option but could also be ordered as their own options

Re: What Do You Think It is Worth?
That truck has the window trim, but I don't see a SPID option. Perhaps it was added later.

nearly the same for me, but in 1982, also for $1000. Mine was a '69 GMC Sierra Grande

Re: What Do You Think It is Worth?
That $1000 is now the equivalent to $3954 right now.

Re: What Do You Think It is Worth?
That's interesting. What was a 71 Chevy new, 3Kish? 3K in 1971 is supposedly 22.7K today. A new Chevy costs about 50K plus. To think a 1971's material are >>>>>>>today's builds.
But you know, new trucks have multi and multi-purpose tail gates now. The old tailgates only opened and closed like a tailgate.
