Glove box light options

I purchased a glove box light kit from Brothers a couple years ago. Its been sitting in a corner since I received it. I just can't bring myself to install it. The quality just does not look like something that would have been acceptable in the 1970's. Also, the kit places the bulb attached to the switch in the corner of the box that is reduced in area for AC duct work. This would shadow the open area of the box making the light nearly worthless in my opinion. The glove box liner has what appears to be a hole for a lamp socket up by the door catch. I am guessing the screw holes for the box door catch would be the attachment point. I've never seen a lamp that would go in this area. How was an original glove box lamp set up?
Any photos or ideas on a better approach than what the aftermarket is offering?

I was not impressed with the quality of the reproduction lights either, so I went with this older style. Still doesn't address the issue of being blocked by the A/C duct notch in the glovebox.

Those all appear to be aftermarket and in a location that would seem to shadow the deeper section of the box. This aftermarket liner indicates to me (small round hole?) there was a lamp separate from the switch but I have never seen one.

I thought that the hole is there to help you pull the box in during installation. Some of the non-ac boxes have the hole also.

Glovebox lights of the 70's were always pretty dim. IF you could find a map without blinding the driver, that's all they were good for anyway.
Wouldn't be tough to just install the switch and run wires to relocate the socket somewhere further over.
Could just stick a short strip of LED tape up there out of sight and run the leads back into the switch. It'd work 5x better than any 70's glovebox light I ever saw

Interesting idea. I have a switch I think will fit that looks better than the cheepo aftermarket one I have. I also found a light on Amazon that I might be able to cut a hole and attach to the cardboard box.
The tape is interesting and a good back up idea if the parts from Amazon don't meet my expectation.

Coming back around to this thread to show result. As mentioned above I was not impressed with todays aftermarket glove box light. Very flimsy with an exposed lightbulb in a less than perfect location if you have AC do to the configuration of the box.
So off to the Amazon I traveled to find a better solution. I needed a normally closed push to break switch and a lamp housing. Anything with a incandescent bulb was not looking so good. LED options are plenty. I found a good for my needs choice for a very good price. The lamp was so bright I added a 3 way switch and 68 ohm resistor so I could dim if needed. The 3 way switch allows me to select off, dimmed or full output. The door switch fits the factory hole fairly well. Every bit as good as the aftermarket switch. The 3 way rocker switch is rock solid. The lamp is also rock solid in its method of mount to the glove box card board. No glue needed anywhere. I used the round hole in the cardboard and enlarged to fit the lamp housing. After all this I am convinced the hole in the cardboard from manufacturer is not for a lamp but simply to assist installation of the box as RickJZ noted above. It places the lamp a bit forward but in doing so makes for very good light on the opened glove box door in the event it is needed as a work surface. If the lamp is not too bright for you then the rocker switch and resistor is not needed. Or not use the push button and simply turn on or off with the rocker. It was a very easy Saturday morning project. I used the mount screw for the latch to ground the lamp but I think there is better locations. This location was easy on the back.

Nice and tight. Maybe locating it on the right side of the AC "wedge" pointing away from the driver would have helped counter the brightness....or maybe that just reflects off the passenger window instead :shrug:

I find it annoyingly difficult to source LED's rated in Lumens, so you can actually determine the brightness, but then maybe I'm just being dim
