Blazer Top - Need Help
According to the PO the blazer top is the OE top, it was originally white and
has been painted black, well I'm going black on black with this blazer when I get it painted in the spring, I hope, I have the same seat covers as Diane in the blazer she's selling except mine are black w/ white houndstooth? inserts, I want the top white again, what is the best way to do this, please help me, all and any ideas welcome, if possible be specific about what to use on it.

Are you sure it wasn't black to begin with? The majority of '72 Blazers had black tops.

I was looking into doing the top in white super-liner which is similar to rhino-lining except they do a real good job with colors. The texture will come real close to matching the factory and it will be real strong. I was going to have it media blasted and the all fiberglass repairs done and smoothed out before having it shot white by super-liner.

We had ours hand sanded smooth, and then painted white with a little flatner in the paint so it wasn't to shiny. I am not sure how to get old paint off tho. Good luck to you. Maybe talk to a painter or body guy and see what they would recommend.

Whatever you do.......Don't chemically strip the paint. It will play hell on fiberglass. Check out some Corvette sites on fiberglass panel paint removal. I know alot of people media blast Corvettes with very good results.

Media blasting fiberglass is great. All the corvette shops around here are doing it now for the retorations. Dont use a chemical stripper as stated in the earlier post it will play hell with the gelcoat and cause problems with the paint.

Flat house paint is the answer you are looking for. It will look just like factory.

Had mine media blasted. Worked great... removed the paint and didn't damage the gel coat.

Getting it Clean
SEM makes a product called "scuff & clean" part #38338.
It says on the label..."FAST CLEANING AND SANDING ACTION WHEN REFINISHING OR BLENDING" This is what I've been using to prep my top for paint. Just use a scotch brite pad and water, scrub and rinse with the hose. That easy. Works reall well and leaves the original texture intact. I'm using the SEM black to paint it with, no primer, no mixing. Just spray it right out of the can. It's basically a non-glossy finish but not a flat finish either. |
