Exhaust preferences?

I know this subject has been talked about a lot, and I know that the answer to this question is somewhat subjective, but I'd like to know what exhaust systems you guys like to run and why.

I currently have a stock 350 in my 76 LWB with true dual exhaust, no cats, Cherrybomb glasspacks, and medium sized chrome tips turned out behind the rear wheels (stock location). It is somewhat loud, but the sound is not as deep and mellow as I think I want. I'm debating on whether or not to change over to Flowmaster 40 Series either Original or Deltaflows, but I'm just not sure whether it's worth it or not, or how much sound will be in the cab with me. I want to be able to hear it some, especially when I get on it, but I also want to be able to hear the radio.

Any recommendations or other info would be appreciated.

hmmm as you said this is very subjective, so i'll be subjective
I'm not a fan of glasspacks, as they sound too loud and, well, redneck ish, and this is coming from Jeff Foxworthy approved redneck. My cousin is giving me his Flowmaster mufflers off his car (cough mustang cough), and im going with headman headers and pipes, gonna elliminate cat (shhhh) and put those mufflers on. I plan on using stock exits, as this is simplest.
thats my plan. Y or X pipe would be cool, but thats more $$$ i aint be havin.

I put 2 chamber Flowmasters on my 73. With headers and 3" pipe, it was still somewhat loud, but nothing compared to the open headers. I would suggest 3 chamber Flowmasters, if you want to stick with the Flowmasters. I have Dynomax mufflers on my Blazer, and it is too quiet for my taste. They were on it when I bought it, so they will stay for now. They are quiet even when you get on it. I think anything would be a step up over the glasspacks, but that is just my opinion.

I totally agree. I have two chamber flowmasters,sanderson headers, no cats and it exits in front of the rear wheels, if you want it fairly quiet this aint the way to do it ha ha.

Thrush Super Turbos are the way to go. Flowmasters arent all they're cracked up to be.

Yep, I generally prefer Turbo type mufflers on street toys. Ive got 2.5" on my truck with a pair of Dynomax Super Turbos & Sanderson headers. I like it

i have dynomax headers,2 1/2 inch pipes,turbo mufflers and currently no tail pipes.its not to loud but has a rumble when i get on it.my exhaust system isnt finished however as im going to add an h-pipe-cliffsta i only paid 35 dollars for mine with all the pipes and mounting hardware from summit-just some food for thought and i got some exhaust turndowns for now a friend was going to use on his car but he decided not to.i plan on getting tail pipes in the future.

Thanks for all of the input guys. This will probably show my ignorance here, but what is a "turbo style" muffler and how does it differ from something like a flowmaster?

I am running dual 40 Series Delta Flow Flowmasters with 3.5" tips. Has a quiet, mellow sound at idle, and sounds good when you get on it. Pretty quiet at highway speeds also.

I'm going with a set of heddman headers (if the guy ever gets back to me about them) a homemade x-pipe, a set of aerochamber mufflers with stock exit pipes if I can fit them in with my blazer tank swap.

i've got the summit brand headers, custom made 3ich true dual exhaust going into a 3 inch in and out flowmaster i got at a junk yard, and thats it no turn down or anything

Thanks for the input everyone. I had a pair of Flowmaster 40 Series Deltaflows installed earlier today, and they definitely sound much better than the glasspacks I had. They have a much deeper, more mellow sound.

its kinda odd how a y or x pipe improves air flow "supposedly" since your basically making the air travel a farther distance. Exhaud is the one item i am the most hype about eventually getting for my truck. it improves performance, increases MPG, and it sounds cool. I just wish i had $$$, but K Mart should be hiring me anyday now...

i am kind of in the same boat as cliffsta, the main problem for me is money but i did get a estimate on a local guy who is very reputable for $225 + tax, true dual pipe setup but this is also with standard mufflers.. the quote at the professional place in town with flowmasters said almost $400 but thats with 3" from the exhaust amnifold back

headers and glasspacks

i like the sound of glasspacks. i had flowmaster 40's and they did have a deeper sound but it vibrated the interior of the truck. glasspacks have that old muscle car sound

stepside, i know i have tired 350 as is so i dont see any need for anything bigger than 2 1/2
and i have been thinking of glasspacks too, around this area they tend to crackle a bit nicer due to the salt air and water helps break them down a bit although some trucks get too much of the redneck sound (such as duals on a v6 frod ranger)

flowmasters are far from being "flow masters"... take a look inside one and explain to me how all those baffles increases flow over a good straight through design.. true i am running flowmasters, but i am working on a new setup, from the headers back. i will also be going with 2.5" pipes instead of 3" like i have now.. i couldnt pass up the deal i got on the 3" duals and flowmasters... they have served me well but its time for a change...i may put the old exhaust up forsale on here if anyone wants it.....
