Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
VERY exciting morning so far for me! Got a bunch of pics from the shop! Here's some of the fuel tank being modified - they came up with a MUCH improved design that not only looks better, but holds a LOT more than the original 30 something gallons we had... I think it looks freakin' SWEET!!!

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
And they didn't stop the redesign there either - came up with a MUCH improved way to mount the front of the tank that's really easy to remove if needed!!! Tell ya man, these guys are GREAT!!!

And here's a few to show you how much better it fits in & looks compared to that original "boxy" look it had... Man I'm stoked!!!!

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
And last but not least, my radiator FINALLY made it to the shop...... It looks fantastic too!!! Now they can at last start the mock up of the front end & get everything finalized up there!!! They'll still need to order the aluminum overflow can, but gotta see where it's gonna sit & how much room they have first.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
The shop you are working with seems to know their stuff, so maybe I am just missing it, With a tank that long and that rigid are there going to be any isolators to allow flex difference in the frame and tank?

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
Also finally managed to finally get my front accessories all sorted out. Stayed late last night & called Scoggin-Dickey. Couldn't get a "kit" in the truck style, so we had to piece a kit together that's exactly what would'a come on the 08 HD trucks & all NEW!!! Gotta call em back tonight & pay for it, but it's a done deal!

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
FIrst off - this is a one ton frame so naturally a LOT stiffer than the half-ton versions are. Secondly, there are NO plans for this truck to be out there "flexing" on a rock climb or super-serious trail... For the most part this truck is gonna be my daily driver & most of it's off-road duty will be recreational at best. They know this going in & are building it accordingly - and yes, they are VERY good at what they do.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
A different shot that better shows the dimples in the baffle plates they put it for strength. Almost a shame that no one will probably ever see it again...

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
Ok, so according to WFO's math - my new tank should hold around 38 gallons of fuel when completed & installed. It's supposed to go out next week to get the inner liner applied & then we'll see what they end up going with on the outside. I kinda prefer to use a spray on style, but we'll see what's best.

Thats a sweet tank! I'm thinking like 50+ gallons. It's bigger than my 41!

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
That tank looks freaking awesome. Will it have straps under it or is the angle iron front and rear the only mount? If it's 38 gallons that's about 235 lbs plus the weight of the tank... It looks like it's ready to accept an in-tank pump?

We are using a new GM sending unit/pump assembly - the same ones used for the 2008 model HD trucks with a 6.0L engine. Mast said the stock pump should run their motor just fine. I wanted to be sure I would be able to replace all this easily later down the road if I needed to & not have to hunt for special parts that a dealership or parts store wouldn't have available. |

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
That'll be really nice. I'm a big fan of as many OEM parts as possible. I pretty much need to keep a book on mine so I can remember what the heck to order when I get to the parts counter. Yours will be 5 times more complicated!

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
Yeah, will definitely come up with some sort of "quick reference" guide once I get all my final paperwork so when I do need to order anything down the line it won't be so complicated!!! This is another reason though that I didn't do the Cummins swap, I wanted it to stay as repairable friendly as possible while still getting better technology & fuel mileage.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
Well.... Initial quote from Mario came in today - >$16k OUCH!!! Kinda expected it though given the quality of his work. This also includes full media blast & epoxy primer though as well as materials & labor. Really can't put all this into the project & then "skimp out" on this phase of it I suppose... Needless to say my July dreams of completion are vanishing into thin air! Most likely I'll fly out there while I am home to see it & it'll probably still be at his shop.

It's spelled Keven & he's the main fabricator/welder there at WFO. Does AWESOME work too!

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
Yeah a CC LB is a lot of square footage of body work, but still, holy crap... I'd be scared to drive it at that point.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build
Eh, can't be scared to drive it or else what's the point of building it... That said I will definitely be very careful where I park it & all. It's not gonna be some "show" paint job with lots of graphics - actually a pretty straight forward look. It's like you said though - it's a LOT of body to prep & get straightened out before shooting.
