My '62 with original seat & upholstery, just re-died the original turquoise colour to the moss green to match my interior cab colour. Black section of seat was just refreshed with black vinyl die. I did add a 1" high density foam pad between the seat springs and original foam to firm the seat up. Quite comfortable now, added 3 point seat belts as well.

Yep! I'm a bit of a diamond plate nut! Love the look of it, since I was not too crazy about how the rubber floor mat just ends at the front edge of the seat I decided to get some rubber diamond plate mat & molded it to the contour of the floor under the seat. Worked out quite well, the sill plates also help keep it in place. I used the same stuff on the kick panel areas too. I also used similar stuff to line the inside of the bed, and used 1/8" steel diamond plate to skin over the old bed sides which had become quite distorted over the years. It also ties in well with the wrap around rear diamond plate bumper.

Here's the seat that was in the truck ( for sale in the classifieds ) and the 99 Silverado contoured bench seat with a "fitted" blanket. I drove it for a few weeks to make sure I liked the fit on a long trip and gave me time to order all of the material and the seat heaters. I also chopped down the frame to lower it in the cab for a better position and installed a couple large pockets in the rear panel including a shotgun sleeve.

Most kits come with a metal tape that you hold the grid pads down to the seat foam with. I just glued them to the bare foam with contact cement so they wouldn't move around when the cover went on. The grid harnesses poke out the back and are virtually plug-and-play when you run a power wire to them. Once the seat was bolted down, I spent 2 hrs running a sub-panel off the fuse panel and wiring the heaters, installing the switches etc. I have since spent many hours with a warm back

I had been using Doorman kits, but wanted to try the guys on Ebay that are selling them around $55 shipped. It's the same as the Doorman kit for 3x them money. I would do the Ebay kits again.

Thanks they are real comfortable. On any trip over 20 miles my butt would go numb with the old stock bench. I picked these up for $50.00, I had to drill 2 new holes and massage the mounting base a bit. The seatbelts are surplus Hummer units .

From an upholsterers experience and observation, one thing I can give ya'll a tip about.
The highest wear spot on most seats is the driver's side, outside bottom edge. Where the facing of the seat bottom and the seat side panel comes together.This is the place that the seat of your jeans/chinos/sweats/OP swim trunks or whatever you got rubs across when you enter and exit the cab. Hence, if there is welting (the cool looking rolled bead) around the seat facing and side panels, this is where it tends to come apart. The welting provides a lip to catch on any clothing and eventually the stitch that binds the seam together lets go. More functional, and just as nice looking is a french seam. This seam is where the two pieces are seamed together, then the seam allowance inside is separated and a strip of material is stitched in, with a double needle. This means there is actually three lines of stiches holding the seam together. From the top side (the side you see). You see the seam, and a line of stitches on either side of it. It's a nice, classy and tough seam. Next is a 'top-stitch'. Similar to a frenchy, but no backing cloth, and only one visible stitch. Typically the seam allowance on the back side is folded to one side (depending on which way you want the face to lie) and stitched through the three layers of fabric. Again, this is a good, tough seam, and more common than a frenchy. Welting looks very nice, but there is only a single line of stitches holding the layers together. The top, two plys of welt covering and the side panel. Add with the drag of countless back pockets pulling on it, and you can see why they fail more. So, for a daily driver, the top-stitched or french seam for the seat bottom half is better. For a show type or occasional driver, a welted seam works and look trick, but won't last as long. |

The black line around the seats here are an example of a welted seam. Eventually, with high use, that bottom will wear out at the welting. In the first pic you can see the breakdown of the edge from entering and exiting the vehicle. That top panel will go first. An upholsterer can replace just that panel. Just be sure to catch it before the foam gets tore up too bad. They charge more to repair the foam.

This seat bottom is french seamed. One problem with a frenchy is that it can be difficult to prevent a 'puckered' look, especially on the curves or angles. Usually you can leave a tag of the backing strip out at the end of the work, and pull it tight and hog ring it in place to alleviate the wrinkles. There's a few other tricks to help this as well.
Nice seat. I prefer the benches. I like having the girl sit next to me, not 3 feet away. Quote:

Just picked my seat up today from the upholstery shop. Went with gold metal flake and white piping. Had them do my visors too. Matches my gold metal flake vintage wheel.
