Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
today I voted. and took a nap. and then the most life changing thing happened. I remarked how my 9 year old was only about 6" shorter than mom, so back to wall she got measured, then mom, sure enough, 6" difference. shes gonna be a tree. but then mom wanted to see how I have shrunk in my old age. I have been 5' 11" since I went through MEPS at 17, on every license and ID following.
turns out I am 6'1" bow before me puny humans. I am even 1/4" taller than the son in law who is just a tall son of a gun. who knew you could grow after 17? I though boys were all in before that. Quote:
firmoo, i can get glasses with progressive lenses so cheap I get new ones 2-3 times a year.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
It's been a long time coming. I've never been so hesitant and cautious with a project as this one, but also a good bit of work involved. I hadn't touched it since I poured the concrete in the new floor space late last winter, until the past week or two. On Sunday I got the come-alongs in place, then lifted and set it back down on the pieces of pipe I'd roll it on. I was so close I decided not to go to work on Monday and make it the move day. Just 3 or 4 pulls on the come along, measure, repeat on the other side, and go around checking points every few inches. Also, every couple inches a pipe would be ready to roll out and I'd go around and feed the third one in before the second one rolled out. I took the pictures with 2 1/4" to go. I forgot I had to cut back more on the area you see mated up in the picture I showed. I worked again on it yesterday and it is set in place and bolted down. the picture doesn't show, but I removed the cinder block, too.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Lots to do, yet. First I need to repair the roof and rotten rafter tails/facia/soffit from the shakes going bad. I'm going with steel roofing. The best part is soon I can start putting things back in to get 'closer' to normal around here.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
I've been thinking I should go ahead and get the lights hung myself. I missed the best weather but hopefully after this next cool down we'll get another break. I've been seeing lights put up on some places. I've seen a couple lit up. Really? Please wait till Thanksgiving, ey?

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
the calm before the storm,a tropical cyclone blowing through here starting tonight and tomorrow looks like a good day to not be outside, lots of wind and rain, the tail end of what hit Florida in the last few days.i plan to pull the motor out of my truck tomorrow but today was beautiful so i dug the yard all to pieces to run some drainage pipe from one end of the house and one end of my shop.i have more to do once i finish this up and i'll do that soon if i can fit it before the weather gets bad for the winter.another productive day day and tomorrow as well if the engine is on the stand by the afternoon.i'm sure it will.

I guess this was a thing you were waiting on the tractor for. Nice to be getting it done before the freeze

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
got to spend some time with my just turned 18 yr old son today, which is a rarity as he only gets friday and sunday off from work. was actually very enjoyable.
we put the new shocks and struts he bought the other week into his 'bird struts went fine except for the top bolt...ended up cutting both of them off. we actually lit one rag on fire from the cut-off wheel before we got smart and soaked the rags wit water.... |

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Son replaced the garbage disposal in the rental house. Only took three trips to the box store. Did a little paint touch-up and went home. New floor in the kitchen, clean the carpets (having this done, I'm over this kind of labor) and this house is on the market! I'll be so happy to see it in someone else's hands...

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Installed new wheel bearing hubs on the back of my 2012 Impala. Not too hard a job. Replaced the fronts about 20k miles ago and the rear recently developed a vibration like the front had.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
My dad knew a guy who rented a house for more than long enough to own it, but he started a family early and never was able to scrape up a down payment for a home of his own. Renting to those kind of people would be golden, but these days they are hard to find. Part of the problem was that the wife in that family was my wife's friend. The only people who will beat you out of money more than friends, are family. Sad, but true. I didn't want to rent it out to start with. I had just retired, and it took me two years to drag my sorry butt around and get the place fixed up enough to sell. It was easier than working, though. I'm pretty sure that if I had worked my old job for those two years, I'd be dead. Like I told my doctor, I was staggering around bouncing off the walls with fatigue. What used to be done by seven people got squeezed down to four, of which I was two of them. When the other guy took a golden parachute, I got his work, too. I was one year too young for that golden parachute. The projects have moved on in that time, but there were three people doing what I did before I retired, and B******g the whole time. I guess I feel a kind of masochistic pride about that.

He took such good care of that house that you would have thought it was his. It was tricked out. Tiki bar patio, the whole nine yards. But the landlord sold the house. There were condos coming in and that house was in the way. I don't know what the condo people paid for it but I'm sure it was plenty. They demolished the house to make way for the condos. My buddy at the age of about 55 finally bought his own place out in Ontario. He's fixed it up nice too. That was about the time I was renting out my place. He wanted to rent it but I had already rented it to my cousin. Huge mistake. I second that you should never rent to relatives. My cousin always paid on time and I assumed that he was keeping the place up. Wrong. He was there for 5 years and I don't think that he ever cleaned anything in 5 years. I don't understand it. I gave him a sweet deal on the place. I could have got $2700 a month and charged him $1500. You can't get a 1 bedroom apartment around there for $1500. This is a 4 bedroom house. He loaded it up with his kids and grandkids and I would bet that he charged them rent, so he was paying nothing. He was mad when I said that I was selling it. He wouldn't move. He kept giving me excuses. I finally told him to get out or I would have him thrown out. My wife is retiring. We need the money to offset the loss of income. My wife is too young to get any Social Security. So he finally left after calling me a bunch of bad names. I guess that I need to cross him off my Christmas list. And then there's my brother. What a piece of work. I own 3/4 of my mothers house and he owns 1/4 (long story) But he lives there rent free and claims that he wants to buy me out but then hires lawyers instead to gum up the works. He just keeps stalling me. Why shouldn't he. He's living there for free and he doesn't have the money to buy me out, so I get nothing but a headache. Another relative to cross off the Christmas list. My family reunions just keep getting smaller.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Good for your buddy, sounds like a good guy.
All that's left at the rental is a little paint touch up, clean the carpets and new kitchen floor. Those last two are hired. I'm going to take the leaf blower over and blow all the cobwebs out of the garage. Other than that, I'll be going by every day just to make it look busy so I don't get any squatters.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Worked on tearing the floor out of our rental house kitchen and bath. The flooring was replaced in the '80s, so has no asbestos in any part of it. The guys came out and were going to lay the new flooring right over the top of the old linoleum. Many phone calls and arguments later, the guys went away, and we'll have to remove the current flooring to the subfloor ourselves. Lame. I'm too old for this fecal matter. I know where the asbestos is, and it ain't in this floor.

If the subfloor is wood why not just lay some 1/4" Luan plywood over the top of it? That would make a great new subfloor and seems like it would be easier than removing the old vinyl. LockDoc

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
What I didn't do is go along with my Buddy on an adventure that sounded interesting. The adventure was run out and down through WVA to Huntington along the Ohio R. to pick up a railroad speeder. I helped him drag the trailer out last Friday when he asked me if I wanted to go along.
Why I decided not to take him up on the offer. He inherited this trailer from a contractor who left it behind on his rental property. He brought it to where we pulled it out from, never used it. It's like new and a very heavy built single axle tilt deck w/16" rubber and full width with a pintle hitch. First red flag came when he said "Tires aren't all cracked up". I looked between the treads and said, "They're cracked between the treads". In one ear and out the other. The tow vehicle is an Astro Van with the small receiver hitch. Can you smell that second red flag coming up? He bought an adapter for a ball coupler that mounts to the pintle rack on the trailer and a 2" adapter for the receiver on the van. This is many red flags in one. The trailer with load will be at the old vehicle's max tow capacity by way of coupling through a light duty frame-mount hitch adapted (extended) "up" to 2" using a ball coupler (extended) on the heavy trailer with cracked tires. He is also cutting out the round connector on the trailer to put a flat one on since that's what the Astro has. So no trailer brakes. I'm overdue for a great adventure but I decided to pass this one up. If I throw caution to the wind I like to make sure the wind is blowing first. We are very different in that way

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
That's a great idea. I'm going over this morning to see how tough it is going to be to get the old stuff up first, though. I really want to stick the subfloor to the joists to get rid of the squeaks.
