Bolt in steering rack

I have got to say that afterreading through this entire thread, it is very hard to resist buying one of these kits for my '84. I was prepared to drop over $300 to replace all of my steering components anyways, I'm wondering if instead it would be better to put my money in one of these and hold off on buying new springs and drop spindles for now. From everyone who has set one of these up already on a 73-87, how much money needs to be spent on top of the kit from rob? I am running factory pspump and steering column. Is this sonething that can be done for $1000 or less?

No fix is needed for any '63-'72 LCA. Any stock or aftermarket arm is fine. The only arms we had a problem with are the OEM '73-'87 LCA.

73 upper and 72 lower. The bushing style is difference. Hope that helps.

so after looking at my engine mounts I find that they are in the front 2 holes on the frame. my truck is 396 big block. so it looks like there are more issues to overcome here. I assume that all big blocks used the front 2 holes?
rob, can you provide any help here. sure would like to use your r&p upgrade on my truck.

hey Rob,
i have a question for you, i'm having some difficulties installing my rack... i know i have to do a little (read alot lol) of modifications for my specific truck to get your kit to work. here's a brief overview of whats going on, i have a '61 gmc that i have grafted a '65 front cross member onto this solved some of my problems. my main problem now is my truck has X'd frame rails, which means that my front and rears rails are boxed and narrower... i've already cut a hole into my frame to allow the first u-joint to pass through. so since my frame is different i don't have any reference holes for the where to drill for the bearing mount. i've included a few pictures to help give you an idea what i'm talking about.
i decided against PMing this to you in case some one else was in my boat, thought it might be decent information to get out there

one last thing ignore the two holes for the motor mounts... those are not in reference to anything, just holes i drilled to keep the engine in place right after i swapped it in x_x

Well it looks like your on the right track. The '60 - '62 frame makes it a chore, but it can be done. The catch now is the lower steering shaft and bearing. The shaft and bearing should come threw the top of the frame in the center of the rail. I think the best bet here is to insert a tube threw the rail and weld it in. With all you've done so far this isn't too bad. 2nd, you may be able to locate the bearing support we provided ender the top of the rail, but it doesn't look wide enough. I'll post up some picts and dimensions thurs. If opt 2 is a no go, give me a call, and I'll send you a tube cut for the bearing.

well good news is that the bearing does fit inside the rail just need those dimensions and i should be good to go
