Re: Dad's 1979 GMC Heavy Half Transformation

I finally made some progress on the box last night. Removed the paint from the sides, and spot blasted some surface rust in the hinge areas, welded up some trim holes, and started smoothing the top of the rails, and fixing some dings. This box is in very nice shape, it had all factory paint, and no previous body work. This evening I plan of finishing up with round 1 of the body work, and getting a couple coats of epoxy primer on it.

Curious as to what method you use to strip the paint down to the bare metal? So many options out there, but your work looks outstanding, and we all know it is in the prep to get the great finish.

Thank you Sir, I use a 8" 3m clean and strip disc on the sander/buffer. It makes pretty short work out of paint removal on a large area, and it doesn't remove any metal. It leaves a nice brite finish, so I'll go over the panel with 80g on a da sander to give it a nice "tooth" for filler, or epoxy primer.

Re: Dad's 1979 GMC Heavy Half Transformation

Made some progress last night, got a couple coats of epoxy on the box, and hood, and some high build on the hood. The plan for tonight is to get some slick sand on the box, and get the hood painted blue.

Got some slick sand on the box, and got the hood painted. Hood turned out nice, there will be a few days worth of fine tuning on the box before it's ready for paint.

Wow...so that truck had the TOP level chromed GMC grill-that’s awesome! Ridiculously hard grill to find these days! And they are pretty only valuable if they are super nice-once the chrome is peeling of cracked-it’s over.

I have one chrome grille I picked up for $10 at a swap meet and it has one tiny crack just above the hood handle. However, for you GMachinz, I'll sell it for $900!

Re: Dad's 1979 GMC Heavy Half Transformation

Was it a chromed grill? I dont remember seeing it. If its a clean crack thats an easy spot to epoxy and hide it tho! Just gotta remember it when you open the hood!

Thanks Mike

The block sanding on the box is complete. I shot some epoxy on the sanded through areas, and gave the whole box a couple coats of high build 2k primer. Tomarrow night I will sand it down with some 400 grit, and paint it.
