I washed the truck and got it ready for Wheels day, and the Chatham Steam and Traction Festival over Easter weekend.

Finished installing the new chrome Ididit steering column today. The new Mooneyes steering wheel is due to arrive tomorrow. Here’s a before and after shot of the column:

Nice job on the Ididit! If I don't like my restored factory column I think I'll do the Ididit or a Flaming River - but they ain't cheap!

IIRC you have a floor shift and that means a floor shift column with only turn signals and an emergency flasher switch. Key stays on the dash, right?

How difficult was it to install and what size did you choose, (what length)?

Yes I have a floor shifted 4 speed manual transmission, and the ignition switch remains in the factory location. I picked the 32” chrome steel version, part number 101320020. It was very easy to install. I used the factory floor clamp, and years ago I added a muffler clamp at the dash to secure the column to the lower pedal support housing. I’ll add a photo of this later today in my build thread.

In the engine compartment I retained my 2nd generation Monte Carlo intermediate shaft. I simply knocked the cross pin out, ground the round portion into the DD shape, trimmed 7/16” off the end and joined the column to the intermediate shaft by using a polished SS Borgeson joint. The lower shaft is ¾” DD and the bottom of the column is 1” DD. I haven’t taken any pictures of this yet, so I’ll also add them in my build thread later today.

The most difficult issue was sorting out which wire would work on the Ididit adapter for the horn. I ended up using the straight wire that came with the column, and spliced on my old connector to the horn plate. The one that comes with the adapter was soldered to the horn plate, making it nearly impossible to connect after the wheel is installed.

One interesting note – every Covico, Grant, and Superior wheel of this type I’ve seen has the top two mounting holes level across the top like these:



The Mooneyes wheel apparently was designed with the Ididit column in mind, as they rotated the mounting holes clockwise:



This was to accommodate the nylon tower on the horn plate being set at 10:30 on the top of the column. This allows identical travel left-right on the cancelling cam.

With the Covico wheel, I had to position the horn plate at 9:00 as the upper left mounting hole is located at 10:30.

With new Mooneyes wheel, I simply pulled the adapter back off and rotated it to match the wheel position. I did have to drill a new hole at the location shown in the blue circle so I had room for the horn wire to make the turn into the cavity under the steering wheel. It sounds more complicated that it was. The entire modification/adjustment took about 10 minutes.

It is exquisitely finished and is truly beautiful compared to my classic Covico version.

just got back from the DMV. My truck is now legal to drive in the Sunshine State.

Changed my OEM 30 ohm fuel sending unit for a converted 90 ohm sender, I think I'll have to do some fine tuning though, it doesn't go all the way to full on the gauge when full. Now it's time to run a tank through it an see how it registers when low. Thanks Chevyrestoguy for the sender to modify.

What is the difference in a 30 ohm, and a 90 ohm? Would the gauge have to be changed too?

I had to change because aftermarket gauges need a different Ohm value in order to read correctly.
