If you want LOUD, go with dual 12" glasspacks. I'm going with 18's and from what the guy at the muffler shop said, these are just as loud as the 12's. It's gonna have 2.25 coming from the engine to the mufflers, then 2.25 out either dumping in front of the rear end, or angled out behind the tires. I ain't sure yet.

My GMC has a set of true dual 2.5 inch pipes with a set of Flo Pro mufflers, along with a set of cheapy headers. The truck sounded simply awesome all the way around. At an idle, you could definitely hear every cylinder fire from each pipe, but it wasn't obnoxiously loud by any means. When you were just crusing, the truck was actually pretty quiet, you could definitely hear it, but she wasn't droning, or being excessively loud. However, when you punched it, that truck roared like she had no pipes at all.
Crusing down the highway was nice, no droning until about 75 mph. All around a very nice setup in my opinion. All of this was on a fairly stock 350 If you want sound clips, I have a pair I can email to you, just PM me

Had the same problem when I was young, every one was running loud mufflers and after saving up my cash I put on duel 13" glass packs. My dissapointment when it was still not very loud, didn't have much of a rap and a mellow idle, everyone laughed at me. THEN I put on a set of headers, and let me tell you what a differance, rumble at idle and could wake the town when hard on the gas.

Okay, so 2 1/2 pipes is also what the muffler shop reccomended. My next question is who can say what, yea or ney from experience and or hearsay about the H pipe set up ( crossover) before the mufflers?????

the crossover belongs as close to the engine as possible.
as i was messing around yesterday i decided to fab up my exhaust. comes from headers into the 3 inch racing cutouts, with old oil field caps i can take off on each side to run it open headers. goes to 2 1/2" pipe to the flowmaster 40's, then 2 inch pipe running in front of the rear wheel. not pretty, but functional, and loud. also when i was at flowmanster's website trying to figure out what kind of mufflers these were i was in their store and found these. http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/accessories.html standard h pipe... and then these. i can take the spare tubing in my backyard, and make myself an h pipe. sweet. (10 per pack) Last edited by matthufham; 08-03-2005 at 12:42 PM. |

MandrinSixSeven The video's are sweet! I think more people here should post burnout clips. Great looking truck also.
mathufham, what kind of oil caps are those? Could you post some more pics once you get that system installed? Looks like a cool setup and would like to see more.

the caps were made by the previous owner, he had a farm. he had an oil field too and it's some sort of cap you would find there on a tractor or some old field piping. you can buy cutoffs like that from jegs or summit and they have 3 wingnuts on each side, with mine, you bend back the 2 tabs (with a hammer, they're stiff) and they pop off. you can also get electric ones or ones with a pull system so you can open them inside the truck. stacy from TRUCKS had electric ones on copperhead. |

I'll be welding up my exhaust soon and it should sound pretty healthy...I've done a lot of exhaust in the past as well. I'm going with full tube headers (Cyclone or something, they came on the truck when I bought it), mandrel 2.5 bends, Dynomax welded ultraflo mufflers (Magnaflow should sound about the same) with turndowns in front of the axle.
Can't wait to hear it...the straight thru mufflers usually give the most sound (Flowmasters give a lot of sound, but they're poor performers). If you go with straight through mufflers, go with good ones. Make sure they're perforated core rather than louvered core. Right now my poor truck has cheapo louvered core glasspacks clampled to the headers, no pipes. It sounds really mean but it's real slow (big cam and victor jr intake, not really a truck motor!). |

Mandarinsixseven, First off, awsome videos!
Next, I would recommend 2.5 inch exhaust with regular 40 series Flowmaster mufflers and an X-pipe. The x-pipe will also make a sound difference. The loudest exhaust I've ever heard was an old F#^d truck with a tired 302 with 1.5 inch pipe and old burntout glasspacks. Darn thing would dang near bust an ear drum. I think the truck sounds great like it is. A whole lot better than my cheapo turbos on my truck. To each his own though. Just my .02 Matt

"the crossover belongs as close to the engine as possible."
So would you put the H pipe up close and under the trans pan? I was thinking about further back and tucking it in the crossmenber. Or would you move it forward and insulate it?

I just put an 18" glasspack on my ramhorn single exhaust that exits right behind the cab coming straight out of the muffler, and it is really loud when you give it the gas. I'm talkin straight 2.5" pipe loud, and it'll still rumble with the engine idling. Guess it just depends on the ways that these mufflers are made. I bought it for 25 bucks at the muffler shop and just bolted it on. I don't know what brand it is, and it's not painted either, just raw steel. I'm gonna sand it down and and paint it with high heat chevy orange paint. As soon as I can afford it the duals are going on.

exhaust
Whoa guys.. I had 3" exhaust with an H pipe and one chamber flows dumped at the rearend on my Stroker Camaro and it was the best sounding exhaust I ever had. The car sounded like thunder as it loped its butt off.. hence my screen name. Especially around 1800rpm it wasn't loud it just hit hard and resonated everything around.. (fun times in parking lots) I am adapting that same exhaust to go on my truck and will see how its sounds with my somewhat mild 355 using the 3/4 chevelle headers and dump it right through the trailing arm crossmember. I dont have any room with the rockers planted. Should get it welded up in a few weeks. Bo

Hey Camaro Dude,
I have 3/4 chevelle headers into 3" manderal to super 40's. 355 mildly built. I have the exhaust tucked up over the stock tranny crossmamber and cut out the crossmember to fit the 3" thru. It dumps under the box. I love the way it sounds but I am planning on running tail pipes to dump in front of the wheels. Most likly not possible on you truck being that low.

A good built motor with some compression and a cam....Some good headers....3" pipe and Super 40 flowmasters. And of course no tailpipes after the mufflers...That is all you need...
