one last thing, what is the average temp a sbc runs at? i guess a lot depends on climate outside etc but if im around 200f right now when its feburary i wonder what it will be like in july or august, at what temp would it overheat? or is that an open question too?

200 seems real close to me Ive had some run 215 to 220 regularly (variables) will change alot cam, heads, compression and such. When your engine is healthy they don't seem to run too much hotter when the climate changes a some changh is normal though. Ofcoarse heavy stop and go trafic will change this. BTW guess it's time to get that factory gauge fixed.

One thing that comes to mind, was your temp gauge working before the new\rebuilt engine? If so was that with the same sending unit? If it's a new sending unit (on manifold vs head) you may have the wrong temp sending unit.

the temp gauge was working before with the old engine. this is a new sending unit. but identical to the old one in appearance (im sure that doesnt mean squat though). i wonder if there is more then one sending unit for that style sender?

why is the gauge at 190 if you have a 160 thermo? I use high flow MR GASKET 160 thermostats, never use fail safe thermostats
