Re: old air
Man I just ran across this thread and really should of posted something sooner about my experience. I'm really disappointed with my old air setup just like the one ampsyco purchased. I was expecting better performance from it. First off I specifically called Old Air and asked if their unit would dehumidify warm air (our winters in Louisiana are humid) they said it would. It really doesn't. As far as using just heat, the stock was way better. It doesn’t heat up quickly and not sure why. I have a 5.3 and it warms up to 195 with in 5 min of driving. However it takes the heater more like near 10min to blow hot air. You can feel the two lines going into/from the heater core and they are hot. Also the return should be cooler then the supply it's not (the drop in temperature across the lines means its leaving the heat in the cab). The a/c does cool (it would blow 50deg on a 95+ day ) but the lack of good flow form the unit, cold or hot is what makes this unit sub-par for the cost. Old Air claims that by placing the blower after the evap and heater core it works better but I doubt it. They also use an older style blower motor; at least the Classic Auto Air uses a heavy duty spal fan. Gringoloco bought a CAA and before he installed his setup I compared the flow between the CAA and the Old Air and hands down the CAA flows better and seem quieter.
The Kit was complete, The stock looking control panel is pretty good, although the way the control cables connect, it forces them straight down and can be clearly be seen. Both cables need to be at least 12in shorter. The tech staff was courteous and attempted to be helpful but I still was left disappointed. I think the best setup right now hands down it the vintage air gen IV setup. It’s only available as a universal kit right now but there is a guy who put one in a 67-72 truck and didn’t have any problems. I’ll try to find the thread. The genIV has a much better heat control (not a flow restrictor inline) which allows for better temperature adjustability. And has the ability to do a true dehumidified heat. I don’t think its that much more but is defiantly looks like a better way to go. My old air setup was the worst 900$ I’ve spent on my truck to date. I am super close to removing it and installing the gen IV setup. Sorry I didn’t see your post sooner. Let me know if I can help. Graham

If you looking for a direct bolt in kit I think the Auto Classic Air or Vintage air kit probably is better then the old air. But I really think the GenIV kit would be well worth the money and the hassle of being a universal kit although it could be too much as well I havent aproached Vintage air or better yet the guy that installed it their truck to see how it works.

I installed the VA kit in my 66 about two years ago and I am pretty satisfied with it. The cooling is very good to excellent. The kit includes a basic default control system- which is two knobs, one for "mode" and one for fan speed. A third themostat control knob is mounted under the dash for some reason. Premium controls are offered at extra cost, of course. You can view the installation instructions at: http://vintageair.com/DownloadsSecti...ir)%20Inet.pdf Cheers, Billydonn

Re: old air
I too have been running the VA for about 3 years now and my only complant is the lack of a heater temp control. Blows cold though even in the Sacramento 105°+ heat

Re: old air
ampsyco...
how well does the heat work... does it take a long time to heat up? and do you have a picture from sitting in the passenger seat? I'd like to see how much of it shows. thanks

Re: old air
Yep... that's how it looks. I wish there was a floor heater outlet too. Cooling is sure good. What kind of controls do you have... just the knobs?

Re: old air
If there is a floor outlet I don't know about it. As far as I know there are three air outlets: left dash, center dash and right dash, plus the defrost outlets. Is there a flap or something I don't know about?

Re: old air
There is a internal vacuum operated flap that should close when you switch from defrost to heat. Your switch does have four settings, right? econo, a/c, heat and defrost. Look in the center, right over the trans hump and you should have a long narrow opening much like the stock heater outlet.
