Can 73-87's pull off the "patina" look?

Maybe the trucks are still too new to be rusted, or maybe the body style doesn't lend itself to the rusted look.

Around here they can be rusted to the ground in the same decade in which they were built............LOL

I bought a '77 in 1982 that already needed fenders and rockers.

Not standard, it's a delayed-reaction option in most parts of the country.

The funniest thing is that "back in the day" you could tell one that was undercoated by the front of the hood. On trucks that got sprayed the leading edge of the hood would rot right through to the outside, long before the usual places. On non-coated trucks the body could nearly fall off of the frame and the hood would be fine.

I guess we are spoiled here, my '77 Sub has no rust on it. I did have a Toyota 4Runner that was originally from Wisconsin that I built into a rockcrawler. It was rusted terribly. Tried to fix it, but ended up cutting most of the body off and tubed it out.

I have a lot of respect for you guys that work on rusted stuff, I won't ever do it again.

Would love to see more examples of the old look. I just pulled my old truck out of my parents yard this spring. Money is tight with building a new house.....so either the truck will wait and get done someday or we let it age and get the look.

Lots of elbow grease has brought the truck looking pretty good. But the Wisconsin winters has started the rust again. Would like some opions. Even thought about throwing a logo on the side of the truck also. Attached are pics of when I got it in March ( pics 1 and 2 ) and how it looks now( pics 3,4, and 5).

It was my father-in-laws pickup for his well drilling business. The paint is faded has a few dings and dents the only thing it dosen't have is the logos. He used magnetic signs. After I get the junk unloaded tomarrow I'll snap a few pictures and post them. It still is a good ole truck. Heck even one of the bank tellers in town wanted to go for a ride! Love them bench seats.

I just don't get the johnny-come-lately patina thing. You see a lot of this on the "traditional hot rod" scene. What the young guys don't realize, is "back in the day" the in thing was the nicest paint you could get.

The only thing worse than a rusty car is one made to look rusty on purpose, in my opinion.

My truck is "flat blue." Not on purpose, of course. That is just what happens when a cheap paint job spends 12 or 15 years in the Texas sun.

With some stacks, it'd look like a Chevy version of Dodge's Little Red Express - not a bad thing IMHO. It'd look like a 70's custom...

There is a big differnce between patina and cancer......LOL.

Patina is the normal wear and fading of the old paint. When it eventually wears to the point of gone, you get some surface rust. The dreaded "iron cancer" starts from the inside and finds it's way out.

I like the patina look but neither of those last two posted trucks would fall into that category for me.

Here is my contribution to the subject:
I think it would work better with a pre 80 truck, and would look better with a stepside because they look older. Like so many other things, to me, if it has the right stance it looks good. Sometimes I like that better-when something is full of "character".
Here is a truck that I have been eyeballing. I'm emabarrassed to say but this is about a mile from my house. I have been meaning to stop and ask about it but I've run into these people a time or two--this being a small town and they really are human garbage. Oh well, I like their white trash truck.
I think this could be really cool without much work. I even like the grill without knowing anything about it.

there is a nice patina 76-78 4x4 right down the street from me that I always admire. I need to take a pic of it sometime. Funny ALL these trucks on this thread have round headlights too..

I don't think rust holes are attractive in any shpe or form. Flat paint is cool, faded paint also but our body styles rust in the shade with no help so I'm not for that end of "patina"

There`s plenty of weathered,faded,scuffed,and scratched 73-87 GM trucks around.And,that`s patina.It`s not something you make.Just like the older stuff,go buy an original tarnished truck,lower it and put some cool rims on it(and whatever else you like).I`d love to find a 73/74 Cheyenne Super 454 with old dull original paint and trim,lower it,and put some Cragar S/Ss on it.
