Quote:
The fan shroud I used is the original 307 small block shroud. I have a big block shroud that I was going to use, but it's opening is too large for the jeep fan. Oh well more for the ebay pile.

Re: Lil 307 that could....
...this 71 camaro rs had a 307Turbofire 2bbl with a powerglide 2spd trans. She weren't no slouch. No a/c ,manual steer/manual brakes, nothing holding it back.
My best friend had a 4bbl350/turbo350 72 camaro at the same time, we'd always line em up anywhere we ran across each other. I would always get the jump on him and carry a full car length until those 4bbl on the 350 got wound up at the end of his 2nd gear, then I'd pop 2nd and get a little jump again...but then the 4bbl 350 would just roll on by as he went thru 3rd gear. ...unfortunately a rocket scientist, here in Huntsville Alabama, doesn't understand how an unprotected left turn light works with on coming traffic. |

HA HA Success!!! She runs like a raped ape!!! I still have to dial in the advance curve and limit the timing, install the relay and switch for the fan and replace a cracked exhaust gasket...but she runs and has a very nice lope at 700rpms...

Re: Lil 307 that could....
So here she be....dont mind the dirty interior and body...She gets used and abused. Once spring hits she'll get a detail along with the F150.
She's still running the factory ramhorns at the moment...Chevelle mid length headers and a 3" Flojo single exhaust are in the works once Christmas is over....

Re: Lil 307 that could....
Very nice!!
So you figured your compression to be 9:1 with flat tops .025 in the hole, 64cc chamber vortecs (that is the same as stock, right?) and .021 gaskets? So your compression increase would come from the gasket thickness? I thought by 71 307's got dished pistons? Do you happen to know what your craking compression was before and after the hop-up? Do you know why the steel shim gaskets leaked? Did you spray them with copper coat or other sealer? The factory head gasket was also a steel shim, right? I was thinking of using the same head gasket to keep the quench distance tight. But I would rather not have the hassle of leaking gaskets.... Sounds like a great build on a budget. I was a moron for not picking up a couple sets of Cash4Clunker L31 heads...... I thought the sodium silicate would get into the guides and whip them. But they were so cheap I should have taken the chance...now they've all been scrapped. I think you did the right thing! These 307's really seem to wake up with some compression. I'd love to get the compression up to 9:1 in our 71 307. (the cranking compression is 120-125psi on all holes) I did everything but the heads and used a smaller 206/212 comp cam. While its better, it still feels lame. But it must have 8:1 or less. I was thinking about going the 416 58cc 305 heads, but the compression will be up twards 10:1...which might be too high for my application. So I'm looking for cheap easy ways to get 9:1. I guess I need to figure out what my current compession is! |

Re: Lil 307 that could....
Yeah pretty close to 9:1 SCR. I never really checked the old cranking pressure....never felt the need, she ran smooth as glass. Remember its not just the increased CR but the MUCH better chamber and increased valve size that make these heads great. There is absolutely NO comparison between the old 307's performance and its current level. Day and night.
I too was concerned about the sodium silicate until I watched them "kill" a couple cars. That stuff never has a chance to make it up to the heads, it does its dirty deed quick! Regardless I had the heads tanked and checked with no issues. I did 2 sets one for the Chevelle engine with all the bells and whistles and then this stock set with a simple valve job. Both engines run great, sold me on the heads and its well worth getting a new intake. The steel shims were a mistake, they are great on a freshly machined surface. I am currently designing a single 3 inch exhaust to replace the existing stock y pipe and bomb. No telling what will happen once I lose that restriction, but one thing is for sure....it'll be fun.
