Re: running a 31x18x15 on a 64 fleet

I would find a rearend shop or race car fabricator in your area to weld on the housing ends...it requires a jig/alignment fixture. I've had this one for many years: http://markwilliams.com/detail.aspx?ID=163

Make sure you select the tire and wheel combination first and take your measurements with them mocked up at ride height. In additon to chassis and rearend housing centerline, be sure to take into account the stand off of the axle flange and type of brakes you plan to run. If I go to the extent of narrowing a housing, I typically go with aftermarket axles.

Or.......... as suggested, look for a narrower housing from a different vehicle. Sometimes they can be obtained easier.

Re: running a 31x18x15 on a 64 fleet

Only thing I can find is a 9"at 58" from a first gen bronco my uncle said a 9 from
A mid 50s model ford car would work said it should be around 53 " side to side. But I don't know where I would find one of those

That is the tough part of the equation if you plan on running that wide of a tire/wheel combination...you'll almost have to narrow a housing, or run a wheel with an unconventional backspace dimension.

Re: running a 31x18x15 on a 64 fleet

I talked to a buddy who told me of a guy not far from my house that will narrow a rear for 80 bucks an he knows another guy to respline the shafts so I'm just going to narrow up a 12 bolt an keep it gm just use a newer rear with 5 lug pattern an do it 51 inches like you done yours an I should be able to run a standard 15x14 wheel with 4.5" back space I think an still lay it out like I want

I remember reading that GM axles are tapered vs Ford axles (I believe that means they can't be resplined). Might check into that first.

X2...the axles for the 12 bolt will be tapered, so you'll need to have new axles made. I would highly recommend mocking up the tire/wheel combination and taking the measurement first before cutting down a housing. My housing width may not work for your application...not to mention the stand off of the axles and brakes you end up running. My housing width was specific to the Mark Williams/Lamb housing ends, axles and disc brake set up.

Sorry about my blue bed dolly (I use it to lift the bed off and on, and to lean on on while doing some of the work on the chassis). Here's an older photo without the bed...

Re: running a 31x18x15 on a 64 fleet

Im just going to run factory 5 lug drums for the rear an how much offset do your wheels have an will the outside of tire clear the inside of the truck box sides. You know the part where the top an bottom come together on the inside of the box where it has the 3/4 lip that goes back to the top half of bedside. If I narrow the housing to 50" flange to flange then it should be 54" from mounting surface to mounting surface on the rear. Cause brakes are about 2" thick roughly. ok if I make there rear a total of 52" wide from mounting surface to mounting surface I will have 10" on both sides of the rear at that point theoretically I should clear every thing with no problems an still have a couple inches to spare on the back side
